for a while now, an additional CD drive has magically appeared on my system.
There's a "SCSI and Raid Controller" device also in Device Manager.
The Phantom CD drive roperties says it's a "AXV CD.DVD-ROM SCSI CdRom device"
on Location "Bus nr 0, Target ID 0, LUN 0"

If I remove it in My Computer > Manage > Disk Management
and Uninstall the device driver in Device Manager - it keeps coming back.

    Actual devices:
2 MAXTOR HDD on IDE 0
Sony DVD burner / ASUS CD burner on IDE 1
    Ethernet card
    USB flash card reader

The phantom CD (F:\) has been there for weeks but I ignored it.

Now I'm adding a PROMISE IDE controller card for an extra HDD... which installed OK (as G:\) and have used now for a week, but it doesn't always re-appear after a re-boot. Now it won't show at all.

(Edit: Now it's appeared again... 16 jun)

    Ideas ?

(XP home + SP1 ... and up to date)

    cheers
    Steve

Have you recently installed Daemon Tools or Clone CD/DVD or other such software?

    Don't have those.
Not sure what other "such like" programmes might be..

I don't remember exactly when this Phantom Menace appeared, and so can't say exactly what I've installed during that time - but it won't be that much.

GordionKnot codec & RipPack, DVD RegionFree have now been on for a while.
CARA Room acoustic software was probably the last new progr I installed.
and an update to Ahead software's InCD (part of NERO), a few weeks ago.
Hmmm.. thinking about it - I wonder if that was it...
    Could it be ?

Not made any hardware changes for more than six months (last thing was swapping out the VGA card to a Radeon 9600 but I think this was before the phantom CD drive appeared)

any other hints / ideas ?

    Steve
