I am sure most of you are aware of the problems facing our American friends regarding the release of P&S DVD's only.

Recently the largest DVD rental chain Blockbuster in the US changed it's policy and only stocks the P&S versions.

Some of you will not care a jot, but if this practice continues it is very likely that it is only a matter of time before this policy comes over here. Saying that we have more W/S sets in use than the US but i think we have a duty to help our American friends, so please sign the petition which at the time of writing stands at 6,000 signatures.

    Thanks.

    Signed.

Also as an aside it looks like Region 2 discs are going back to P&S again. Life of Brian which came out a couple of weeks ago is P&S only, with Dolby 2.0 and no extras. No wonder we all buy Region 1 discs if this is the crap were are left with on Region 2.

So get signing the petition it effects all us DVD users.

Merry Christmas to one and all. Just waiting for my other half to finish getting ready and we can *finally* go out and get drunk. I've been sitting here all togged up for the last hour!

it's now 10,181 . this needs to be stopped now . we are supposed to be going forward we don't want the format to be dragged in to the dark ages by these idiots .

the worst thing is i bet these people actualy think theye are doing the public a favour by taking away the black bars . so instead they lop off half of the film for us . thanks a lot

Well done Phil for spotting this one. What the hell are these Blockbuster idiots up to for gods sake.
First they almost strangle the DVD format at birth by trying to support Divx, now this.
If the consumer is informed enough to purchase a DVD player, he/she will also have the savy to upgrade to a widescreen tv in the not to distant future.

I think as part of the analogue switch off that will inevitably take place both in the states and here, 4x3 transmissions should also bite the dust.
Companys such as Sony who also own Columbia Pictures should in theory only produce widescreen dvd's. Along with 100% widescreen transmissions, this should in fact elevate sales of their widescreen products and kill off the old 4x3 format for good. Software to match hardware if you will.
If this happens, it will be back to square one for Block Headed Blockbuster.

    Eric

    Hi,

Uncle Eric said: "Companys such as Sony who also own Columbia Pictures should in theory only produce widescreen dvd's."

Isn't it slightly ironic (and sad, as well) that Columbia Tristar - who are a division of Columbia Pictures, obviously - produce such great DVD's with loads of extras on the majority of their R2 titles, yet their parent company Sony, produce mainly mediocre stuff, with crappy cardboard boxes, no extras, and treat some of their greatest titles with bugger-all respect?! (See "Heat", "Batman" (1989), the animated "Lord Of The Rings", etc, etc!)
