A new DVD is coming out. From www.petergabriel.com :-

"It's official! We have been working our socks off creating something
pretty special. (Which may explain the lack of news updates and a
    definite lack of sleep recently!)

For the first time ever on DVD the video collection you've been
waiting for. Featuring 23 videos, with fully restored visuals and
amazing new 5.1 mixes by Peter and Daniel Lanois, and extras including
three bonus videos (also with full 5.1 surround mixes). The 5.1 mixes
are presented for the first time in a brand new DTS format that is at
full 24bit/96khz surround for the ultimate audiophile experience and
Play will be the first DVD to market with this new technology. In
addition, Dolby 5.1 and Dolby Stereo soundtracks are provided for
those of us without the latest and greatest equipment.

As if this wasn't enough each video has a short introduction with
either "Making Of" footage and/or spoken introductions by Peter
    through the ages.

Also there is an advanced programming feature that allows you to
create you own playlist of up to 18 tracks, play it once or set it to
    loop forever!

Release dates will vary per region, but check back as we will post
them as soon as we have the official word.

The track list is as follows:

    Father, Son
    Sledgehammer
    Blood Of Eden
    Games Without Frontiers
    I Don't Remember
    Big Time
    Lovetown
    Red Rain
    In Your Eyes
    Don't Give Up
    The Barry Williams Show
    Washing Of The Water
    Biko
    Kiss That Frog
    Mercy Street
    Growing Up
    Shaking The Tree
    Shock The Monkey
    Steam
    The Drop
    Zaar
    Solsbury Hill
    Digging In The Dirt

    And the extras:

    Games Without Frontiers (Live 2004)
    Modern Love
The Nest That Sailed The Sky
    Trailer for Growing Up Live
    Trailer for A Family Portrait
    Trailer for Secret World Live
    Credits"

    WOO HOO ! ! ! !

This is fantastic news, been waiting for PG to something like this for ages  .I've already got Secret World Live and Growing UP live, and the sound on both of them is great in both DD and DTS, so this will make a great addition to the collection and can only be better in DTS 24/96.
Hope it's released soon, birthday coming up soon :D

This is excellent news! I would have been happy enough with a 'Best of' DVD-A, but this is even better! By the way, all of his albums are out on SACD, but I believe most of them are still only 2.0 stereo, which kinda defeats the object, imo.

I thought that the idea of SACD was to get people to buy the same album all over again :)

I have So and Birdy Soundtrack on SACD/CD hybrid and they are far, far superior to the original CD issues, especially So.

Hi-Fi+ magazine carried out a "test" between the original CDs, Hybrid SACD layer, Hybrid CD layer and vinyl.

They on the whole preferred the vinyl, but then again they would say that as it is on the whole, an analogue is best mag.

Some friends and I did a similar "test" :boring: and prefreed the Hybrid SACD layer. (Different equip though)

    Kenny,

Is 'So' a 5.1 mix? If so, that will be on my Christmas List! I do believe that PG 1/2/3/4 were all released on SACD in 2.0 stereo.

No it's 2.0 I'm afraid, but sounds good. It also sounds good on the CD layer with my TAG McLaren TMS5 + Sub :)

Also for those that like the older stuff "Plays Live" on SACD is Good

but the best is "UP" in Multichannel SACD.

    Hi,

Looking good for PG fans, as for the sacds has no-one listened to UP in 5.1 mode it is brilliant. Loads of song have some great channel seperation ie blind boys just at the back and growing up has a lot of rear action as well.

As for this new release it seem october/november will be great for genesis/pg/pc fans.

And for the dts track does anyone have a quick quide to any amps that play all 5.1 channel in 24bit/96khz and do you need a dvd that is able to output all five channels as well ? Last time I looked at this was on the seven dvd for the different intro but I think that was just stereo. I am going to go and look at the manual for my amp and dvd.

    Thanks in advance

Also of interest to Genesis fans, is that there are SACDs in the making of, Lamb Lies Down On Broadway and Trick Of The Tail. No news of release dates yet. LLDOB was due for release in October, but has been delayed.

Unfortunately I got up on US Geffen CD before the SACD/CD came out, but I could be tempted! The CD sounds good and I play ALL my music in Tag McLaren TMS anyway.

It's a pity that the Genesis SACDs have been delayed, however I got them all on Japanese import CD a few years back in the mini replica sleeves for £10 each at HMV.

LLDOB was never a fav of mine anyway..... :clown:

    Hi

the mechanic - do you know the details of what spec amp and dvd you need then. Is it a 24bit/96khz decoder for each channel of the 5.1 inputs and then I presumme the same output from the dvd with no downsampling.

I have just got the new yamaha 750se and pioneer 575 this week so hopefully that should do the trick, maybe i will get those queen discs and check it out.

Thanks for any info in advance

It says on the Queen disc covers DTS 96/24, when played, the display on the Denon says :- DIRECT 96. Dunno about the PG claims about being the first, as far as I'm concerned it looks like Queen got there first. Dont care either way, sounds fantastic in any case.

    Queen DVD-As are:-

DVD-A / DTS (both 5.1) and PCM 2.0, all 96/24. It's basically music only, but has DVD-Video in that it has menus and lyrics.

I'm sure I read on the dts site that dts 24bit/96khz is compatible with standard dts equipment (I don't see how though).

Seven did not use dts for the advanced resolution intro and, from what I gather, had it locked so you could not output the digital stream. Which made my amp's 24bit/96khz feature redundant.

    Hi everyone,

thanks for the advice, regarding this :

"I'm sure I read on the dts site that dts 24bit/96khz is compatible with standard dts equipment (I don't see how though)."

From the article in my manual i think that it will just downgrade the sound to standard dts. It also says that " DTS 96/24 5.1 channel sound with full-quality full-motion video for music programs and motion picture soundtracks on DVD-video."

So i think i have the right kit the only problem I have with the amp is that it is very hard to tell what mode you are in as they all have massive names, ie for DD : DOLBY DIGITAL SUR. STANDARD and after scrolling once only standard appears onscreen and several modes end in standard !! So far I haven't found an easy way to check the modes not like my old sony setup with matching blue lights and DD or DTS on the screen.

Also does anyone else have a dvd that will show the title of the film and the jacket picture, again my old sony did but the new pioneer doesn't seem to.

Sorry for going off track a bit.

Well Peter's done it again with "Play" this is a extremly well done DVD, This has one of the best if not the best audio quality in DTS 5.1 Neo if you thought Dolby digital was good think agian!!!
And it has some really cool disc extra's you can select if you want introductions to each song or not, I recommend you do as there are some great clips of Peter both old and new, And as well a great live version of "Games without Frontiers" from 2004 tour, look out for those things they ride.

To finish off I am a massive fan and only 25 to boot so I am also seeing alot of these Videos for the first time, but if you have been around the block a few times and seen it all before you must still get this for the Introductions and Sound Quality
and well some things are timeless.

AND THE DTS NEO 96/24

An excellent dvd all round with the dts 96/24 sounding awesome.

My one gripe is that the volume level on the dts is considerably lower than on the DD, so when you return to the menu you get blown through the wall!! I've checked the amp and dvd setup ( denon 3805, denon2900 or new sony dvd/hdd player) and all seems ok. Levels are fine on my sony setup in the bedroom(non dts 96/24 setup), and dvd a's with 96/24 are also fine. Is this a unique occurence with this disc? Any ideas anyone?
