Boy and a girl? The one on the inside looks a fair bit bigger.

(No need for anyone to post the Father Ted clip :p )

Well little Maggie was here for a good time, not a long time.

Just 18 months after we rescued her (previous owner moved house and abandoned her) she has checked out due to cancer (advanced years didn't help either).

She had to get half a dozen teeth pulled shortly after arrival. She had been badly neglected. Also she spent the first few months terrified of me which led us to believe that she had been abused by a man in the past. Eventually she realised she was safe and relaxed, becoming an exceptionally sweet little sod.

On the way to the vet on Friday she broke out of her cage and sat on the passenger's seat enjoying the view. Hard to believe it was her last journey.

The xrays showed a huge amount of fluid in her chest, indicative of lymphoma. We could have drained it but it would only have returned within days.

The only option was to let her go. I think the vet was expecting that a big lump of a fella wouldn't be overly emotional, so was surprised when I asked for a pair of scissors to take a lock of her hair. She provided the hair, and a little paw print too.

We always ask ourselves why we do it, put ourselves through the pain of losing them so often. But my friend summed it up. He's not a cat person at all, but commented that she had a happy life.

I explained that she didn't actually have a great life, she suffered abuse and neglect for much of it.

He replied that "her last 18 months were happier than most animals ever see".

Very true. And so we carry on. Maggie will never be replaced, she stole our hearts in record time. But her spot on the couch will be taken in time, there are too many in need for us to close the door.
