    Hi People.

    Which processor would be fastest??

    Athlon XP 2200+ OR Pentium 4 2.2Ghz

And which is the better graphics card?

    ATI Radeon 8500LE OR GeForce 4 MX440?

    Thanks

    John:blush:

If this is for an HCPC, then speed at that level really doesn't matter - noise and cooling (which are related) are more important. FWIW, I believe the Althons are quicker, but it may depend on what sort of job they're doing.
Again, with the graphics cards, it depends what for - the Geforce will probably give a better account of itself in games.

If your asking which is the fastest then the P4 would be, Athlons are unable to touch a P4 once they drift over the 2ghz ASAIK.

But speed should really matter to much if it's just playing DVDs.

I have to disagree with both posts, I'm afraid.

While not wanting to start an "AMD vs. Intel" debate, there are sufficient benchmarks floating around to back up the fact that an XP 2200+ will outperform a P4 2.2GHz in the majority of circumstances. Certainly in terms of raw, unoptimised FP calculations the XP is way ahead, but as RichardH said, speed isn't too important with an HTPC unless you are going to use it for heavy audio/video work. It's only the faster P4's; the 2.4B, 2.53GHz and 2.6GHz models with their 533MHz FSBs that really start to pull away from the 2200+ significantly. For and HTPC I would go with something like a Celeron-T 1.2GHz to get away with minimal cooling and therefore, noise.

The Radeon 8500 is pretty much superior to the GF4MX440 in every way - faster in games, better image quality, DX8.1 compliancy, better DVD playback, component ouput support etc etc. A more suitable alternative would be a GF4 Ti4200... the "GF4MX" line essentially consists of clock-bumped GF2MX's.

Bow to your knowledge on the GFX cards, MuFu - I've not been keeping up with all the latest changes...

With HTPCs? No contest, Intel PIII's (or Celeron badged PIII's) all the way. If I was building a games machine I would probably go for an Athlon.
