Pease pudding & saveloys?

I have just finished off a plate of pease pudding & saveloys for my tea, and very delicious it was too.
It's made me think of rare old fashioned types of British cuisine and how often they are eaten in the UK.
Does anyone out there eat these kinds of dishes still? What are the regional variations? Personaly coming from London, I love Pie & Mash, f*ggots (No jokes please:D) Baby's Head & eels etc!
If your from the midlands or the north. Scotland, Wales or Nothern Ireland, what are your traditional but rare dishes that you still sometimes eat.

P.S. Before you start asking/taking the ****, Baby's Head is the old London name for steamed Steak & Kidney pudding. :smashin:

Pease pudding is a traditional Northern dish. First time I ever tried it was when I lived in Newcastle and the secretary who was sent out to get the sandwiches got me a ham & pease pudding stottie. I rather liked it.

You can keep the saveloys though - yuk

Still can't get my boy to eat mushy peas and chips although he will occasionally stretch to that other northern delicacy, the deep fried Mars Bar,when he's had enough to drink.

I always did like black pudding myself, and having spent some time in the Isle of Man,kippers are fine too.

On a similar note...thanks to school dinners, you won't ever get me to eat semolina, tapioca,Spotted Dick(!) or spam fritters ever again.

Black pudding has gone posh since the celebrity chefs got hold of it. We used to get black pudding sausages from our local farm shop which were absolutely delicious but they don't do them any more.

Mmmmmmmm

Dad's home cooked Steak and Kidney steamed Suit pudding is still the best, followed closely by good old traditional bangers, mash, onions and gravy.

My Irish wife brings to the mix Black & White pudding with nice thick rashers, and irish sausages. (No beans of course as thats too "English" for them)

We have also been known to have boiled bacon and cabbage dished up by the outlaw  ,along with some old animal Carcasses that she boiles up in a pan and calls soup (

I did recently try a deep fried Mars bar, and would pay anyone the £1 it cost NOT to have to try it again :suicide:

Thats true!.....our local farm shop now sells boar, deer, and various other unusual animals, plus sausages marinated in almost any beverage you fancy, but at least the local turkey farmer does traditional sausages and bacon at Christmas.

All this talk of food is making me hungry...again.

We have a local Deli which does black pudding sausages, and they are absolutely lovely, but so filling. I struggle to get through two.

They also do cheese topped pork pie topped with branston pickle in... mmmm

you can just order them online

I should have explained....it's an excuse to get a weekend away when my lad goes back to university.

I make the sacrifice of driving a load of his stuff back ooop north and have to stay and have a few drinks and a good meal etc while I'm there.....it's terrible, but has to be done :rotfl:

When I was young my mother would cook pork ribs in mushy peas (big pan, ribs boiled along with the peas).

It was absolutely lovely. Anyone else ever had this?

I love black pudding, but the sort cafe's seem to get hold of, not that skinny sainsbury's rubbish.

My favourite traditional food is pie & mash with licka. My grandparents (now sadly grandparent) lives in Bethnal Green. Place called Kelly's done the best pie & mash ever. sadly now has been taken over by people who know nothing about it and have ruined it. I tend to stick to Manzie's now.

I like mushy peas and saveloys. Dont like pease pudding though.

I'll get my wife to type it up when she has time tomorrow. :)

And yes, there is quite a bit of fat on it, but it makes a perfect meal when you come in on a cold winter's night :D

Nothing wrong with a bit of blubber in winter ;)
