Any one with PH on order may want to wait a little longer as there will be a Directors Cut coming out in January.
It really makes you want to pull your hair out! Why release two editions one month apart! It's just a ploy to grab your cash thats what!

Though I'm more a Tora! Tora! Tora! fan it's no rip-off; all the possible Pearl Harbor variations were announced simultaneously.

The press release is dated August 15 and clearly lists the 3 versions along with both release dates.

    With thanks to DVD File

My point is why not release one version of the movie with all the deleted scenes replaced, who wants a cut copy, unless your getting it as a Christmas present or just can't wait till January.

    Indeed.

Everything was announced and I am personally waiting for the 3-disc Vista Directors Cut in January.
I am not in any real hurry to get it before Xmas anyway.

Hmmm what i think i'll do is make my own version of Pearl Harbor. I'll get the 3 disk and back it up onto DVD-R in a version that i like. It'll probably only last an hour though!

All you have to do is get the Japanese Planning build up, put it with the attack scene and stick the revenge scene on at the end. Then you get a movie lasting an hour with no crappy love story

If your going to announce them together then you should release them ALL together and give people the choice on the day rather than make them wait a month.

    Sure,

but one still has the choice. Buena Vista are not trying to fool anybody, the choice is there to be made: buy early to mark the approximate anniversary of the attack and miss out on the directors cut, or buy later for the full monty disc(s).

I maintain that this is not a 'rip-off'.

The same goes for the much delayed Dogma SE.
It was announced well before the single disc version hit the stores. The fact that it took the best part of a year to appear is irrelevant..... and we're only talking about a month for Pearl Harbor!

What I do object to are the so-called Ultimate Edition re-releases of some Universal movies, that really does smack of profiteering. Looked at from this perspective BV are saints amongst sinners.

Can somoene give me a link to the info on the 3 releases please? I have got the 2 disc version on order because i thought the 3 disc was just got more extras, but is the suggestion that there is actually a version to be released with a longer directors cut??!!

So how long is this cut, It will start spanning different timezones if it gets much longer!

    thanks

Methinks Confucious speaketh with forked tongue. Of course it's a bl**dy rip off.

How many average memebers of Joe Public - not you AV enthusiasts - will have seen that there were 3 versions over different release dates???? Naff all I suspect. Big poster in the tube and adverting in the papers mentioning it was there? Don't make me laugh.

It's a ploy to flog what you can before Xmas and let people go back and buy it again after Xmas.

If they want to be honest how about this. Put a sticker on the cover of every Disc released before Xmas saying there is an extended cut coming a month later. Well?............

Dunno if anyone can back this up but:

I phoned Discemporium up today to pre-order the 3-disc Vista version due in January and was told that THAT version had been delayed until May 2002!! The others are still due on 4 Dec.

Anyone know if this is true? DE are generally quite reliable on these things. :(

I can assure you I'm quite sincere in my opinion, without a bifurbicated taste sensor in sight.

How many posters for the R1 version(s) of Pearl Harbor have been seen on the tube?

    None methinks.

Joe public in the UK will either buy the R2 2-disc edition and be none the wiser anyway; or, like many of us do, buy from a R1 importer and they will see that there are several versions anyway.

It's not a rip-off. There are simply too many people with too much time on their hands complaining about relatively trivial matters.

of course its a money making exercise, how can you suggest otherwise, simply because they are telling us they intend to rip us off. Extras dont cost like they do in the uk with each extra requiring a bbfc payment...

i dont see the need for 3 different versions on 3 different dates

Certain people would do well to look up the meaning of rip-off in the dictionary.

Being a money making exercise doesn't make it a 'rip-off'. Or does everyone think BV owe us this movie for free?

Hey, I work for a record company I'm all for making money and well versed in the art of marketing wheezes!!

This may not be a rip off per se but it is certainly what one would call 'cynical marketing ploy' and one that would upset most punters

I know the meaning of rip off, thank you. This is a rip off, how can they warrant a single disc version over a two disc? the cost is minimal. Then with a disperesed release date.

None of what you say rates BV's PH release strategy as a rip-off.

Maybe marketing ploy at the very worst, but not rip-off.

    It is not grossly overpriced,

It is not a cheat or theft,

It is not an inferior imitation.

You pays your money and takes your choice. A choice that has been available for all to view since the initial press release.

Like I said before, release the 3 editions on the same day, different extras, directors cut what ever and let us the punter pick which copy to buy, and we'll all be happy.

Seems that it has been delayed so that extra footage can be filmed.

They couldn't delay the other 2 versions until the release date of the 3 disc set because they would miss the christmas market.

Perhaps more important than the Christmas market is marking the anniversary of the attack itself.....

On which note (and I realise some sensitive souls may find this in poor taste) how long before a film comes out with the title "September 11"?

Ill give it ten years before the movie comes out.

If they've put the release date back for PH then it is a "Rip-Off" as all the people who were going to wait till January will now buy the December issue and then buy the S.E in May.

Perhaps the reason the date has been put back is that they need more time to prepare the extras, therefore it's not a rip-off.

Simply a little patience is required, it is a virtue after all, something sadly lacking in this day and age of:

"I want it, and I want it NOW" mentality.

All good things come to those who wait.....

That was the point mentioned when these 3 were announced, these 2 you get on this date, and this extended version you have to wait for because of all the extras needing to be compiled and put together,no ones pulling the wool over your eyes, its in black and white in the offical announcement,so as `Confucius` has rightly stated through this thread no one is ripping anyone off on this version,no as for Universal - thats another altoghter diferent cookie!!!

It's similar to the reason I have not purchased Spy Kids yet because there WILL be a SE version out soon. (I Hope).

If its true that new footage is being filmed then fair enough, but if they are using pre-filmed footage then it should appear in the 4th Dec issue. Infact I'll cancel my order today and rent PH at my brothers shop. :D :p I aint buying it twice!

    'Trumpet fanfare'...........as cavalry arrive :)

I'm with Confucius on this one. We all knew about the different versions ages ago.
No rip off here. I've ordered the 'normal' disc to watch. so no worries here. No doubt the Director's cut will contain other stuff, but I'm not worried. I just want to watch those bombs win Oscars. :D

Why would anyone wish to buy a LONGER version of this movie, apart from the actual attack, this movie was DREADFUL!

    From the press release:

" ANIMATED MAIN MENU - The tentative plans for the menus on all 3 discs are groundbreaking. If we proceed with the plan, several brand new sets will be built, and scenes will be shot just for vignettes incorporated in the innovative menuing system."

    And also:

Disc One: PEARL HARBOR-THE DIRECTOR'S CUT (PART 1)

Disc Two: PEARL HARBOR-THE DIRECTOR'S CUT (PART 2)

    It's a 'splitter'!

The last point I would like to make is on how a DVD should be released.

GLADIATOR must stand to date as the best DVD in my collection. When it was released there was just one 2disc version, no, oh you have to wait till next year for the directors cut. The cut scenes were already on the disc. The picture and sound quality are still the best I have seen on DVD and the second disc was filled with plenty of extras.

This to me is how every DVD should be released including PH. Is it too much to ask?
