pdf document scan to editable text format?

I have a pdf document of an image (it may have been scanned or photographed).

As it's an image of an A4 text only document, is there a program that can convert it to an editable text document?

You need to get some OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software - there are a few options in this Google search :D . Or if you have a scanner it may well have been bundled with some OCR software.

I know with a full copy of Adobe Acrobat, if you try and convert a pdf (which is of a scanned image of text) to say a Word document the output usually tends to be an image within a Word document. If you try to convert the pdf to say text/rtf the results are less promising.

If you can print and then scan the document into your computer using OCR software as Mark suggested.

Hope that helps.
