    ...and that's including VAT.
    They currently have a P3 450, with 64Mb RAM.
Keeping case, modem, HD, CDRom (yes, I know), monitor. They use it for games (not too beefy), word processing etc.

    My thoughts were with:
ECS Athlon mobo plus an Athlon 1700+XP processor
    256Mb DIMM
Plus a Radeon 9000, as can't stretch to the 9500 etc. The 9000s seem to beat the cheap NVidia offerings.

I've got about £20 left of the budget, so am wondering whether to up the RAM to 512, or bump the graphics card to a 9000 Pro. Not sure they'll see the benefit of extra RAM.
Another thought would be to go with SDRAM rather than DIMMS, where 512Mb is dirt cheap, AND get the 9000 Pro.

    Anyone any thoughts?

Yes, I'm not sure they'll be doing any large file editing stuff that might require great chunks of RAM. Mind, it's cheap at the moment, so perhaps a good time to load them up with it.

What OS are you using? As Win95/98/98SE and ME really don't get on with 512mb RAM. Anything below that is ok, but the memory management of 512mb falls over :(

I'd stick with the DDR rather than SDRAM, as every little helps there.

Yes, I think it's Win98SE - thanks for that reminder re 256Mb + on Win9x. I can't see them needing more than 256 anyway, so that's that sorted.
