First off please forgive me that I am a complete computer novice...

The situation I have got is that my room is too small to accomodate my TV, games consoles and PC, which frankly I only use occasionally to check emails/msgs etc.

I'm wondering if there is a way I can connect my PC to my Philips TV, thus using the TV as a monitor. I can then get rid of my proper monitor and save some space.

    I've seen this item:

    Would this be of use?

That's suitable if your video card has s-Video out.
If you don't have s-Video out, then there's a product I used a while back called the Avermedia Averkey, which plugs into your vda socket and provides composite, s-Video, and component outputs. It gave OK if not breathtaking results.
It migth also be worth checking the VGA to RGB SCART thread on hear also
