To allow transfer of downloads from PC to a Sharp MD-MT80H minidisc recorder and then use in a Pioneer in car minidisc player, is there any alternative than for me to upgrade the PC with a soundcard with an optical out?

Afraid not - I have NetMD and Hi-MD recorders and a CD-MD deck, so no need, but members of MD forums who own them seem to to think they work well.

No, they only go from PC to MD one way. For digital uploading to PC you'd have can get an MZ-RH1 recorder (only for non-NetMD transfers). Or you could go the realtime route and use an MD deck with optical output, assuming you have an optical input on your soundcard. The cheap option would be using a stereo cable for analogue recording, and use some free software like Audacity.
