    I have the chance to buy the following spec PC at a very favourable (and tax efficient) cost.

    Will it be up for the job of receiving HD stuff via satellite?

    * Hewlett Packard T860
    * CPU Intel Pentium 4 Processor 540 (3.2GHz) HT
    * Monitor 17" TFT - but I would use my 37pf9986 for this
    * Memory 512MB DDR SDRAM
    * Hard disk 200GB-7200rpm
    * Optical drive #1 DVD drive 16x max
    * Optical drive #2 DVD writer double layer +/-R +/-RW 16x max
    * Graphics ATI RADEON X300SE (VGA port, TV-out)
    * Sound Intel High Definition Audio 7.1
    * IEEE1394 / Firewire 2
    * Network interface 10/100BT network interface
    * Operating System Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
    * Plus TV and FM radio tuner card with remote control

    Also - does anyone know the cost of an HD1 card, without the receiver?

    TIA

    Yes. It will be OK.

    The graphics card is 128MB so will be OK.

    512MB of RAM is adequate but you can always upgrade if you need to.

    No idea about a HD1 card though.

    Thanks for your responses.

    Are you saying that 512MB RAM is a bit marginal then?

    The PC purchase deal is via my employer, and apart from 3 models of PC (of which this is the most powerful) there is no choice on spec.

    Total cost would be about £700.

    Add the Skystar card at ca £60, plus the HD1 card at £x, and an Irdeto CAM for the pc at about what £80 - £100?

    Starting to make the Quali-TV 1080IRCI @ ca £530 including card, look a bit reasonable (as I do already have a pretty good laptop for normal use)....

    What do you reckon, chaps?

    the Quali-TV 1080IRCI will only recieve mpeg2 encoded channels so will be off no use for HD-2 which will launch in a few months using an mpeg4 variant.

    I think you are being ripped off by your employer. I got a new Dell P4 3.2 With 1gh of Ram and a 320 hard drive 256 mb 6800 GTO nvidia graphics card fromm Dell factory site for £479 inc del and and vat. This is what i am using for exactly what you are doing. If you want a 17inch flatscreen they are £155 all in. Far cheaper than what you are paying and 1yrs warranty and far higher spec.
    And yes i would go with min 1ghz ram and as fast a pc as you can afford.

    jawbreaker, HD-2 will be available in both mpeg2 and mpeg4 but mpeg2 will cease in 2008.
