Connected my PC uo to my PV500 via a normal 15 pin monitor cable, can see the desktop on the TV, have downloaded some of the HD demos from Microsoft and have succesfully played the 720 files through Windows Media Player.

I can't seem to get the 1080 files to show on the TV though. I get the Windows Media Player background with the menus and the bar that scolls along the bottom that shows something is playing but the window in Media Player is just black, with no picture. I can see it playing on the actual PC desktop in Media Player but just not on the TV.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

The clips in WMVHD are at 1080p, not the 1080i that is used for current HDTV transmissions. Hence the Panny may not support it in it's spec's. Have a look in your manual to check.

Can you see the picture if you run it on a normal PC monitor? If you cant, its the PC not the Panny.

I have no problem viewing the 1080 (p & i) demos from the Windows website on my PV500 via 15pin lead (though it runs a bit slow but thats my PC and not the PV500). So I think it maybe your PC.

Try is downloading ACE Mega CoDecS Pack from ...

    http://www.free-codecs.com/download/ACE_Mega_CoDecS_Pack.htm

Has all the codecs you should need plus Windows Media Player Classic - a very good, no nonsense media player.

Well the Panasonic doesn't have a 1920x1080 resolution so it couldn't. However given that all VGA connectivity is inherently progressive - there is no reason why 1080p material shouldn't replay at a lower resolution via this connection scheme at 60p is there? (After all 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024 are all possible at 60p on most PCs - though ideally you'd run a 16:9 square pixel mode using Powerstrip)

They work fine on the monitor, I just can't see them on the Panny.

I hope the ACE Mega CoDecS Pack does the trick - if it doesn't work then I'm afraid I'm at the limit of my knowledge.

    Good luck,

    Nick

Oh, one thing - then you play video files I do the follow at it works really well for me (more trial and error than anything else) ...

    - Set the PC's display resolution to 1024x768 (this is the native resolution for the PV500)
    - This will turn your 4:3 PC display and make it 16:9 on the Panny
    - So then playing videos with Windows MEdia PLayer Classic, right click on the image, select Pan&Scan then Scale to 16:9 TV
    - This will give you the video's correct resolution on the Panny (great when you full screen it!)
