    Hi,

I’ve recently bought a gaming laptop, and need to buy a headset so that I can communicate with a friend of mine whilst playing games.

I’m looking to spend around £30, but I’m after a pair that will enable me to hear the sounds of the game at the same time as hearing my friend through the headset. Ideally I’d have the laptop speakers muted.

Is such a thing possible? Sorry to ask such a basic question; having been a console gamer for several years, this is my first foray into the depths of PC gaming.

Plugging the headphones in will mute extrenal speakers meaning all sound comes through the headset. You can talk to your friend through Teamspeak or through Steam chat and will hear them over the sound of the game.

As for headphones in that price range, unsure - I think Corsair do sub £30 headsets, look at them also.

Thanks man, do you know if this headset will allow the game sounds to come out of the headset, rather than the speakers? Ideally, I'd like both channels to come of the headset.

Yes it will, you will just need to set the default in the windows sound control panel (you can set it for headphones, and then back to speakers again once you have finished playing if needed.

Just to bring this up. What is the best headset to go for £200 range. Been looking at the steel series range like the idea of wireless but no fussed really. Going to upgrade soundcard also. Is it worth buying a dac to get better sound or are they primarily for audio editing and such?

In the £200 range you would be far better off getting some proper headphones and a modmic. I have beyerdynamic dt770 with modmic 4 and it blows away every headset I've ever tested. The dt770 are closed cup though which is what I prefer but a lot of gamers prefer open. For a closed cup they have a very wide soundstage though.

To the OP, you would be better off raising the budget slightly and getting the hyperx cloud. The only cheap headset I ever thought were half decent.
In fact you can find new ones on eBay going for around 35.
