I remember at the time of the launch of the Mini Mac , PC (windows-based) folks getting all defensive and making various claims about how a PC could be configured to be equivalent to an Mini Mac in terms of size and price.

Since then, as any vendor actually introduced a PC-based system similar in nature to the mini mac?

Or as anyone come up with a self-build project that anywhere approaches it?

I am after something small and cheap to server as a DVD and media player plus occasional web surfing that will happily drive a 1280x768 display (and play back HD material at that size) via DVI.

But I am struggling to find anything PC-based that comes near the mini mac.

The mini-itx system is quite underpowered though, and poor graphics.

The parts are easily obtainable in the UK though.
http://www.mini-itx.com/ is a good place to key an eye on for developments, and UK source of components

There's something I've seen pictures of from AOpen that looks *extremely* similar to a mini mac
