Just bought an LG 4163B DVDR drive for my PC (Windows XP Pro SP2 - all patches). To compliment my Toshiba XS32 that sits under my TV.

Any way, the drive is supposed to read and write to ALL formats available.

Using Nero (latest version with all patches) (and my drive has the latest LG firmware), I burned a test disc to -RW and it worked fine.

Next I tried to burn a -R disc (one of my Verbatim 8X discs I use on my XS32) and it keeps failing.

The error log Nero generates has the following error at the end:

    Drive: HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4163B
    Book Type request [LG]: DVD+R
Book Type setting not supported for the loaded disc type

    Existing drivers:
    File 'Drivers\ASPI32.SYS': Ver=4.57 (1008), size=23936 bytes, created 23/12/1997 02:02:46
    File 'Drivers\InCDfs.SYS': Ver=4, 3, 11, 1, size=99456 bytes, created 03/01/2005 11:33:44 (InCD4 driver for win NT/2K/XP)
    File 'Drivers\InCDpass.SYS': Ver=4, 3, 11, 1, size=28928 bytes, created 03/01/2005 11:33:24 (InCD4 driver for win NT/2K/XP)
    File 'Drivers\InCDrec.SYS': Ver=4, 3, 11, 1, size=8704 bytes, created 03/01/2005 11:33:46 (InCD4 driver for win NT/2K/XP)
    File 'Drivers\atapi.sys': Ver=5.1.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158), size=95360 bytes, created 04/08/2004 06:59:42 (Adapter driver for rec)

Suggesting it is looking for a +R disc but finding the -R. I have tried telling Nero to check the media type first that is in the drive and then use that, but it keeps generating the same error (thank goodness for simulation of my discs would all be ruined).

I don't have any +R or +RW discs to try - only -R and -RW.

    Any suggestions anyone?

I tried applications other than Nero and they failed too though didn't generate a log.

Have you tried re booting the PC in-between disk changes? My 8x super multi won't copy a different audio discs in succession with out a reboot using BHA.

    I hadn't tried, no.

However, it burned a -R tonight without problem, so it could be that the shutdown it had last night worked.

    Thanks

I will see how it goes.

It ONLY supports RAM out of a caddy. Caddies are not supported.

Incidentally, I bought mine from Scan - they were the cheapest. Ebuyer were just as cheap but there customer service is dreadful.

Just ordered mine from Microdirect for £48.76 (inc VAT). Used them once before and recieved it the next day so am happy to use them again.

Am aware of the lack of caddie, though not too much of an issue. Only want one so I can transfer DVD's recorded on my Pannasonic E85 to PC. Can do that with DVD-r but it dosent record the WS switching in that format :thumbsdow .
