PC boots up but is completely locked???

Hi

I was using my home PC last night absolutely fine & closed it down as normal. First thing this morning I go to fire it up, it boots up OK, my normal desktop is there with all my icons but it's absolutely dead?

Can't use the mouse, the cursor is stuck in the middle of the screen & although there is 1 light on, on the keyboard none of the keys seem to do anything. Control/Alt/Delete doesn't work & I have to literally just switch of the box to get out.

Any ideas?

thanks

Make sure your mouse and keyboard are plugged in correctly. If you've moved the PC a bit, they might have pulled out.

Can you borrow someone elses Keyboard and Mouse to test on your PC and vice versa ?

Richie.

Checked all the plugs this morning, all fine & the cats haven't chewed through anything....Could borrow someone elses kit but just seems wierd they would both be duff at the same time so i can't see it being that. It's like there's a lock been activated somewhere??

run the system in safemode.

go to start>run>msconfig>startup

and then disable all the entries apart from the critical 1's (eg. anti virus, firewall, internet thingy)

physically pull the cables all the way out and put them back in again, believe it or not i've had it happen where i checked the cables and everything seemed fine, but until i unplugged and reinserted them it didnt work, and when i did it BINGO it worked again

OK riddle me this:

Neither my mouse or keyboard work on my PC
My Neighbours USB mouse does work on my PC
My girlfriends Mouse & Keyboared (identical to mine) both work on my PC

My keyboard works on my girlfriend's PC
My mouse doesn't work on my girlfriend's PC

Now I'm foxed???!!!??? So the mouse is probably knackered but explain me the keyboard??

Oh great, so after wasting nearly 2 hours & driving 10 miles around the town to borrow equipment I'm home again & on my PC which incidently now works absolutely fine.

So what was that all about?? Nothing worked a minute ago & I checked & swapped everything???

Do your mouse and keyboard use their own drivers? Try uninstalling them and use windows default drivers.

Not sure, but seeing as I can't use the mouse or keyboard I can't check or change anything....

i very much doubt its a driver problem, i think your mouse is just conflicting with they keyboard, either that or you got dust or dirty contacts.

turn the pc off, pull the mouse and keyboard out again, turn the pc on, when it boots up turn it off again (Just use the power button) plug mouse and keyboard back into the correct ports and check for bent pins, now boot up again

Take your friends mouse and keyboard and buy them a new set that way you'll be sure ;) otherwsie you computer may have problems either with the connections on the motherboard itself, maybe dry joints oor something similar, otherwise the controler chips may be on the frits.

If you can get into the bios, i.e. press del or f1 when asked then its most likely windows.
