I have purchased the song dav-2550 home cinema system but it only has a passive subwoofer. Do you think it would be worth buying an active subwooder to beef up the bass? And also would a seperate active one work as all the other speakers would be sony?

    cheers,

    James

It depends if you feel you need more bass, that being the case, yes it would help.

The fact that the rest of the speakers is no issue at all :)

ps. should have mentioned that the specific sub is important, not all active subs will be better

What sort of connection does an active sub require to an amplifier?

I'm a bit new so unsure as to all the different connections.

I always thought that a subwoofer was just like another speaker and was connected to the amp with speaker cable and then had another connection to a plug?

    Cheers,

    James

Your passive subwoofer receives a signal from the speaker connectors that has already been amplified but an active subwoofer receives a low level signal which is then amplified within the subwoofer.

Most amps will have an LFE output or Subwoofer Output socket but as yours is an all in one unit that includes a passive subwoofer, it may not have the required output
