Passive and Active ????

Hi everyone could someone please explain to me the difference between passive and active home cinema systems, Thanks all

I am open to be corrected as I'm not 100% sure, but I think it relates to how the subwoofer is powered. If passive, then it is powered through the receiver. If active, it has its own power supply and I believe is therefore more able to handle higher outputs.
