Given the total lack of any extras, is anyone getting this? I suspect I will probably rent it, and then wait for a Special Edition.

it wasn't cut at the cinema, can't see them cutting it for dvd.

I'll get it if I can find it at the right price in a bargain bin somewhere.

Remember the film will be subtitled.

The entire film was spoken in the native languages of the time.

you mean Jesus never really spoke the queens english?

Personally I'm glad there's the option (for those that want it) to turn the subtitles off, as per Mel's original intention of running the film with nobody except him knowing what they're saying.

Just trying to be helpful. There are a lot of heathens out there that don't like subtitled films.

Mel should have had someone say 'he is truly the son of God' (in latin of course)

    Sly Stallone perhaps!!!

    Any other contenders?

You're right, he should really have seized the opportunity to get some hollywood megastars in to do the odd cameo like they used to in the good old days. There's nothing like a pointless appearance from someone famous to break the illusion during a biblical epic
How about "man of the moment" The Rock :suicide: as Barabas?

I was both shocked and surprised by the ending of "The Passion etc". Hollywood never usually sticks to the truth. I was waiting for Roger Murtaugh to show up, help Jeez off the cross and hand him an M60 so he could waste those Roman bastards, whilst Joe Pesci quippped "They **** you at Golgotha....First they **** you then they nail you....."

It would have been quite nice to have the GroundForce Team do the Crucifixion scene.

Yeah, I don't usually like subtitles, but obviously there's not much choice in this case. It would be quite funny to hear it dubbed so they all sound like they're out of The Sweeny, like the English dub on Ichi the Killer. :D I would probably try to watch this without the subs, as that was how it was intended to be viewed.

Got this today, no extras, as known, but a wonderful full bit-rate (1509kbps) DTS soundtrack! Nice one Mr Gibson. :smashin: Also a 448kbps Dolby track!

This Italian movie from 40 odd years ago is probably still the finest Jesus flick ever made. A thousand times the movie that Gibson's disaster could ever hope to be. Infinitely closer to a "spirtual" experience too, and, strangely enough, directed by an avowed Marxist / Atheist, as opposed to a good "cat'lic" boy...

Probably because (unlike Gibson) the director chose not to tell the story of Jesus as a testosterone fuelled, sub-Bruckheimer action-movie. Trust me Krusty - if your taste runs to "action blockbusters", you'll feel right at home with Melvin's movie! But on the other hand if you mean it when you say "..but hey! its good to have different tastes when collecting dvd", then you could do worse than check out the Pasolini take on the boy with the holes in his hands.

    However...

Black and white and mono sound I'm afraid, plus (gulp!) non-Attention Deficit Syndrome friendly, so probably of no interest to those who measure the quality of their cinematic experience in kilo-bytes per second. Definitely no eight-speaker whoosh-boom-thud from this baby.

However if there's anyone actually looking to watch a good movie as opposed to shaking the plaster off the ceiling...

    Watched it last night.

Not bad but a little long winded in places. I'm sure I wont be spoiling this for anyone but he gets crucified at the end and this takes over 50 minutes. Bit like watching a footy film and showing the entire matches

I don't fancy this movie ( not at all religious although i watched Prince of Egypt at the weekend again, great lil animated movie ) is the fullbitrate DTS track on the region 1 release as this is unusual, for years now films have been released with half bitrate tracks in America ( Re-animator excluded ) or is it region 2 only ?

I hear Mel is indeed planning a sequel and has ditched Mad Max - Fury Road to concentrate on the sequel ( i'm sure the money it made didn't influence his decision )

On another note one of Mels late eighties movies Air America has recently been re-released on DVD with a new remastered print and 5.1 sound, i recall this film looking very filmic when it was on a foreign satellite channel many years ago ( more filmic than most films which have a tendency to look like video although high quality video )
It would be interesting to see a review on this site of Air America.

i think i'll rent it and wait the the special edition directors cut - i hear that it will include an extra scene at the end where the British are blamed for the death of Christ :smashin:

(Mels blamed us for everything else so why not that :rotfl: )
