Pass through query

I am have an (excellent) Sony LCD telly that is getting long on the tooth – it's over a decade old – and I'm thinking of upgrading to the LG CX9. I have a query about pass through; my receiver is the (buggy) Sony STR-DN1040, and my blu-ray, VM Tivo, and Apple TV are passing video through it. Would I need to upgrade the receiver too to get the best signals into the telly?

Apologies if it's a stupid question; I upgrade every decade or so and simply haven't kept up with the latest tech.

The ‘capabilities’ of the AVR would need to match the capabilities of the TV if you plan to connect Source > AVR > TV.

The latest TV’s support eARC - the idea being you connect Source > TV > AVR and then use eARC, ARC or Optical audio out to your AVR.

You should be able to use eARC > ARC and get pretty much whatever your Source is capable of audio wise to the AVR.
