I am considering a ParaSound Halo C2 processor and A52 5-channel amplifier. Anyone have input/suggestions on this critter?

I am definitely open to other ideas, too! I would appreciate recommends for processor and amp (5 or 6 channels). I have a budget of about $6k to work with, give or take.

Let’s see, with the US dollar in the toilet and at the current exchange rate, that should convert to about £2 your money? :D :(

Opinions on the ParaSound Halo series? Other processor / amp I should consisder?

    Thanks!!!

    ParaSound link: http://www.parasound.com/halonew

Edit: Oops! I suppose I should add what the pieces will be driving … Vienna Acoustics all the way around; Beethoven’s in front, Maestro in the center, Hayden’s for surround. I’m between Gravis and Rel on the low end. That decision is pending.

What about the Rotel RSP-1098 processor, and an RMB-1095 5 channel amp?

How big is the room that they will live in?

Given that you are on the west side of the pond I would suggest some more homegrown kit.

Lexicon or Krell might do what you are looking for. Oh and I have a Gravis, but not heard a REL. :)

Parasound amps/processors are gradually beginning to get the sort of press and reviews that they deserve over here, and the amps are very good indeed.

As has been suggested above,if your budget will extend to it,take a look at Lexicon,Krell, and other US brands also.....if not, then also worth considering used high-end gear.

You may also find that REL subs will be very expensive in comparison to brands like SVS which are doing well over here, thanks to the exchange rates, coupled with the excellent performance.

Its a good choice - I have an A51 and a C2 I am happy with both. The poweramp can give most speakers a good grilling without breaking sweat.

Parasound also appear to be keeping the processor reasonably upto date - a few weeks ago they finally released new software for the unit including PL2X. There is also talk of hardware upgrades in the future (just talk- nothing confirmed).

Thanks to everyone for your inputs. I’m reading your responses as they are posted and then crawling thru reviews and user manuals for the units you folks are suggesting. Lexicon has caught my attn as well. Didn’t want you to think I didn’t notice or wasn’t grateful for your replies. I’ll post more later…

Dmurfet - Given that ParaSound is based in San Francisco at the foot of the Bay Bridge, and I am in Oakland at the other end of the Bay Bridge, it can’t get much more homegrown than that…unless we drain the San Francisco Bay.
    :)

For those with ParaSound units: I have spoken with them a couple times. They tell me the Halo design is only a couple years old, there are no plans for any design changes, and sells are exceptionally well in the EU…better than in the USA. Anyone with info or rumors about a hardware upgrade for the Halo series (whatcha hear, Rags???), just post it here. I’d be happy to go knock on their door and inquire about it.

A quick note about REL; their products have limited distribution in the States. A couple of their high-end “ST” series subs are available, some of the “Q’s” are here, and a whole new(?) line of subs (3 models) called the “B” series is here. My understanding is the B’s are only available in North America at this time so I wouldn’t be surprised if you never heard of them. Or maybe they are dinosaurs that didn’t sell in the EU??? Either way, I have heard the REL B2 coupled with a pair of Vienna Acoustics’ Beethovens. With a seamless crossover to that sub had me drooling…my knees got weak.

    http://www.sumikoaudio.net/rel/index.htm

    Wannabe THX - The ht is in the small room, 16ft x 24ft (5m x 7.5m), 9ft ceiling.

On this side of the pond, if you buy a Parasound C2 processor and complimenting A52 amp (5-channels), Parasound will give you an A23 (2-channel) amp free so you can do 7.1 surround. Also, over here Parasound comes with 10-year parts, 5-year labor on their warranty.

I am disappointed no one on this board mentioned the Arcam AV8 processor and P7 amp! I heard them compared side by side with the Anthem D1/A5 combination...Arcam has it.

My short list has expanded to also include the new Integra Research RDC-7.1 processor. Audioholics thinks it's as good as a processor gets right now. Krell has been removed from my list...more hype than value. Next week Parasound is coming into the home for a couple weeks to give itself a chance to prove its worth (home demo)…tho I have a lingering impression of the quality of the sound from the Arcam kit.

Anthem will finally be introducing their video scaler upgrade in June. Estimated cost to upgrade existing D1 processors is $1200-$1500. The scaler will up-scale any input (component, S-video, composite, digital) to 1080i HDMI/DVI output.

Harry...Halcro is Australian, and certainly not our own,and also well out of ut32t5645's budget, and likely to be more so once imported to the USA,although Halcro do have a dealer network there.

    But I am Australian.

And yes, I thought it might be above his budget, but I just couldn't resist. But they sure sound (and look) the bees-knees.

Lexicon are the obvious competition with their lovely L7 but for your stuff I would stick with Halo. Re Rel, well I think you might be better off looking for something a little more home grown (;) I own Rel but they are not the top of the pile).

The list price in Australia is $17,000.

I would be suprised if you could find this within your budget in the US.

Harry - I went and listened to the Arcam in a side-by-side with an Anthem kit. They are in the same price range, $4-5kUSD for the processor. Fwiw, the Arcam easily had it over on the Anthem.

Nic - I accidentally ordered a SVS sub. We'll see if it works out. The SVS PB-12 at $1200 has a parametric eq on it, the REL B-2 at $2500 doesn't. I will have 30-days to play with the SVS sub. Just the prospect of being able to return it saved me from a beating from 'the accountant'...bless her heart.

FWIW,I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with the SVS...I certainly was, having gone from a REL Q201 to SVS,both in terms of value, and above all quality.

The EQ is a very basic single notch filter affair, nothing to really bother about :)

I have the Halo A21 amplifier and the C2 is on my "Save For " List.

I can tell you the Halo A21 kicks some mighty booty :D

Not only does it kick some mighty booty, it also handles the delicate nuances.

Delicate passages and notes are handled like a silk scarf.....gently being pulled over a beautiful women's naked body. Or a feather floating gently across a green meadow.

Have I conveyed the A21's attributes effectively? :D

It doesn't mention any of that in my manual.

And how did you get your address past the mods...

    It should.

no..no. You're thinking in the wrong direction.

You have to go South just before Urananus, and take the Nummbnut exit ramp.

What funny names you folks have for communities over the pond. You have York, we have New York. You have Jersey, we have New Jersey. You have Ark, we have Newark.

Not sure New Urananus or New Nummbnut is going to work out for us.

    LOL :rotfl:

Actually, I'm an American:us:. I live in the United States:us:. :hiya:

My location on my profile is just an attempt at good-natured humor and fun.

The Urananus and Nummbnut stuff, was just a little goofing around between Philly112 and myself. Just being silly:cool:
