Can anyone confirm that this cannot be done?

I tried recording to HDD then switching to DVD to play a disk but pressing the play button didn't do anything.

The manual says while recording you can change drives and can play previous recordings or the one being recorded but doesn't mention playing DVDs.

I have the panny hsr-52 and i can play a dvd fine when recording to the hard drive. I just put the disk in, press the dvd button and then play. No probs

I presume the e95 had a hdd and a dvd button either side of the lcd? should be the same

You may have been trying to record in pal and play a region 1 ntsc disc? this is not possible at the same time, both have to be the same standard.

Ken you probably hit the nail on the head - I was trying to play a VCD with a US TV show mpeg I'd burned myself. I know it can play the VCD so I'll test it again tomorrow. I did exactly what eternaldark said so I was a bit puzzled when nothing happened.

    Thanks for the help guys.

I think kenfowler 3966 is right.

I have a DMRE95 and was watching a region 2 DVD while recording something onto the HDD last night without any problems.

Please excuse my ignorance, but am I correct in assuming it is PAL v NTSC rather than R1 v R2, that is the problem?

    TIA.

Almost all R1 discs will be NTSC and almost all R2 will be PAL but yes, it's the TV standard not the region that affects whether you can play and record at the same time.
