Component leads should be better although the difference won't be as apparant as going from composite to scart say.

The dvd recorder will NOT be multiregion.

Vast difference between components and scarts. Go component.

Is the Viera any good with the e55. I have the e55 but am thinking about the Veira - what does the Q-Link do on the e55?

Using the E55 with the Viera allows you to set a timed recording using the DVB Guide. This is very useful, you switch the TV and E55 into standby and then the TV switches on the tuner (withou the screen switching on) and starts the E55 recording automatically. The whole system integrates really well. I have connected my E55 to 42PE30 by good quality SCART (RGB) and component (progressive). There is a slight improvement with component although it's not dramatic. I think this is probably a reflection of the RGB being so good anyway. Not convinced it's worth spending too much on component cables if you already have a good SCART cable.

Component is the premier connection and will enable you to get Progressive Scan.

Scart is inferior and will only limit you to RGB.
