paniers on a mountain bike, discuss?

i've probably spelt it wrong, but the lass wants to get some paniers to put on the mountain bike for a trip to scotland next wk.

i said don't be silly, she said you do and its great. i said, what, going down mountains?

thoughts?

Depends on the type of riding you are doing. If just hitting trails for a few hours each day, then no, get a decent backpack. But if more long distance XC type riding, over multiple days, then yes.

Wouldn't bother me. I have them and I ride my bike through the bushes of rural Norfolk.

When I grind to a halt it's usually foliage that's wrapped itself around the axle or geartrain, I don't remember anything snagging the panniers.

Anything spiky or sharp enough to really snag on them will be unfriendly enough to your legs and clothes that you're not going to venture near if you've got any choice.
