I have recently aquired one of these oldish machines. It seems to work ok with the only fault appearing to be a loudish sqeaking noise when the tape first starts up or when ff / rw is used. the sound dissapears almost at once. What and with what should I attempt to lubricate something with to eliminate the sound? also does this 'sound' serious?

Great machine, I use to know of hand the part to oil (saw an engineer do it), but I only use the 70 as a back-up now and has not needed oiling for ages. If you do oil it, uses very thin oil, and very little.

    Ruby quartz shades.

    Hi cjpat55
Is that ff when viewing? If it is I think it is in the wheel mechanisms on the RH side, just at the front of the, video cassette tray in the eject mode.
Mine wasn’t a loudish squeak more a dry abrasive sound.

    Hi Garret
Thanks for the reply....mine just gives a loudish groaning type sqeak for a few secs then it goes ok. I will investigate further , particularly the wheel mechanisms, when I have a min.

I offered to help with this problem a while ago but forgot. Sorry! Easy cure - take the bottom off the VCR - put a tape in and press play. Look out for the capstan motor - spins quite slowly. You will see a brake on the rotor - the noise comes from the felt pad. Literally ONE DROP of oil on this pad will cure the fault. Do not be tempted to oil anything else!

    Rgds, GGES.
