Does the first DVD you tried still work? Are these new ones infected with RCE protection?

RCE checks to see if the player is region-free (or multi-region) and if so refuses to play (don't you just love Hollywood  ). A Toshiba I had at one time came with a leaflet telling you how to play an RCE disc, I've no idea if the machine you have is like that I'm afraid.

    "Doesn't work" means what, exactly:

    is it

    a) drawer opens, disc ejected and and onscreen message
    b) disc appears to play, but displays and onscreen message and/or map of the world, and all keys except eject are disabled
    c) disc appears to play but what's on screen is garbled and unewatchable.....

and, is it all R1 discs, or just the new ones?
