I saw the P42X10 yesterday in the flesh and the blacks were very good, not like that picture thats been posted and lets not forget it is the budget model at the end of the day.

 I've got my TXP42x10 set up this afternoon, JL delivery was bang on time

From what I've watched so far it's better than any of the LCD's i've seen when using standard def input, I've got mine showing Sky (football on ITV) through a very cheap scart lead (waiting for some THOR scarts to be delivered) and I have to say it looks great as it is! I tried it with a DVD, played Casino Royale through a Sony RDRHXD890 which upscales via HDMI and it looked very impressive.

As this is my first plasma -

Do I need to run it in for the 200 hr period? I've set it as follows for now

Viewing mode - Cinema
contrast - about 60%
brightness - about 50%
colour - about 50%
sharpness - 3 clicks from the left (i.e small white bar)
colour - normal
colour management - off
eco mode - off
P-NR - off

As for sound I've got it on Music and V-audio for now but I'm playing with it depending on what I'm watching

Thanks

I too managed to get John Lewis to price match the 37X10B with Sound & Vision, for £599, hoorah!

So glad I waited now instead of buying one from Tribal UK or 24Electric, a five year guarantee and a good after sales service is well worth the extra £33!

It's getting delivered on Friday, so I'll post my judgment when it arrives!

To the fellow who asked about price matching, it's a very easy process, just go onto the John Lewis website, click 'Shop Finder' at the bottom, click your local JL store, click 'more contact information', then email them saying you'd like to price match with Sound and Vision. So long as it's in stock and on shelf, they will accept. Then they send you a letter which you take to the store to make your purchase.

Opinions are fine, downright nonsense is another.
You cannot judge black levels or any other aspect regarding picture quality of a screen by looking at a dodgy photo on a forum.

I'm just waiting for all the questions from people wondering about the allegations of poor black levels on the new range of panasonic plasma all which stem from someone judging performance from looking at a photo online. Madness.

The black levels on the PX10 are pretty good, but not much better than the PX80 and definitely not as good as the PZ80/85/81 models.

Hi , first post, just to let you know i got a price match at John Lewis , they matched Sound and Visions £599 ( 37") so am pretty pleased with that, I have spent months researching Tv's and i hope i have made the right choice...

Hi any chance of some more details what exact price and which jl store did the price match?
Thanks
Robert

Hello, I think you can either price match with your local JL or the Trafford branch (within ten miles radius of Sound & Vision). Exact price - £599. After the price match has been confirmed (for me only took 2 days), they send you a letter, you take it to your nearest store, they process the price match and then will deliver it free of charge.

saw the x10 and the px80 side by side in currys today and i hate to admit it but the px80 had a better picture, but could have just been the set up, i hope it was because i plan on buying the x10.
the best price i have found for the 37" is digital direct £580 including delivery and 3 year warranty, but ends today.

oops, that digital direct deal ended yesterday (saturday), i got my days mixed up.

Ever thought the px80 has been on display for months and months and the x10 a matter of hours / days? Plasmas need time to set and bed in.

Sound and Vision do it at £599 with 3 year warranty if you call and collect. Brother-in-law picked his up from there on Fri afternoon.

All set up and it looks bloody good if you ask me.

Very impressed with it they are.... and I was too.

All settings toned down and will be set up properly at a later date after 200-300 hours of use.

Alsina,

You seem to be pretty well informed on the technical side of things, what would you recommend for running in? Is it important to do with these new models?

Thanks

salty, sorry been so long to reply not been on computer, I rang the trafford centre store and told them i could get it at Sound and Vision for £649 ( they wouldn't match amazon or any online shop) they said they would get there guys on it and ring me back ( i did find it at a shop for £579 but the post was £50 so they wouldn't match that).
A day later they rang me back and told me Sound and Vision were doing it for £599 and they were happy to match, they gave me a ref number , i went in to the store and paid...its being delivered Tuesday 17th...can't wait now i just need to know what cables etc i need....
Cheers

I've been looking for a 37PX80 since about Christmas and was holding out to get it for £500, can't seem to even find it in stock now, let alone that price!! Should i stop looking for that and look for one of these instead?

How does the SD capabilites compare to the PX80? that was my main reason for getting the PX80 as i understand it is superb

Hi, have taken delivery of a 37PX10 and have had it for just over a week .Have to say picture quality appears to be top notch at 4 feet plus away from screen . Up close it looks absolutely dreadful - not sure if this is just standard for flat screen - have gone from CRT so it has come as a bit of shock. However,I do have one issue with the picture and it seems linked to the Sharpness setting and quality of transmission . If the setting is any higher than halfway (and sometimes at halfway also) white pixels intermittently appear around the contours of facial features (mainly mouths). Have been back to the shop I bought the tele from and it does it also to a lesser extent on the models there . Should I push for a replacement or is this a feature of flat screen like the awful picture close up ?

You should definitely start checking out the newer model 37X10 instead.

SD capabilities of X10 must be comparable to PX80. Since the resolution of the panel is same, there must be no surprises there. There will be some improvements in terms of picture processing and blacks but other than that it must be similar to PX80.

Your old crt will have been smaller, and would not have to scale the image as your plasma has to with an sd broadcast so when viewing up close poor, overcompressed, bandwidth starved sd broadcasts will look pretty ropey.

Sd dvd will look a whole lot better as it is not so starved of bandwidth.

If sd looks fine from your normal viewing distance then don't worry about it. If you have an hd source then that will look much better from close up, but if you are so close that you can see the individual pixel structure then you are simply too close so can't really make a judgement on the picture from there.

You also do not say whether you are using it with freeview through the internal tuner or whether you use an external set top box (sky/freeview recorder etc). How you have these setup becomes more important with flat screen tv's. Make sure anything setup with scart for instance is set to rgb and you are using a reasonable quality fully wired scart lead.

If everything is connected by hdmi then this isn't such an issue, but assuming the new plasmas are like my old ones you will have to setup the picture for each input, and make sure none are set to dynamic which will look awful

appreciate the quick response and agree I am too close to the screen and am fussy as well . Just trying to understand why adjusting the sharpness would bring about these white pixels and whether anyone else has noticed them either on the PX10 or any other Panasonic box?

Welcome to the forums

It might be worth sharing your settings and letting us know your source. In general I would say the picture shouldn't be dreadful from 4 feet.

Increasing sharpness will generally add nasties to your picture. Sharpness amendments are really needed these days so you shouldn't really need it more then a few clicks up from the minimum level.

Thanks for the welcolme

Settings are

Contrast 50% (middle setting)
BNess 50% (middle setting)
Coulour 40%
Sharpness 30%

Colour and veiwing mode set to Normal

all other settings (PNR) etc off . Overscan on

at 4 feet the picture looks good so really Im just being picky but as with these thing once you notice these small anomolies they seem to be worse each time you look at them . Setting the Sharpness to 30 % (2 clicks left from mid point) seems to all but get rid of the whites pixels but now it has me intrigued as to whether it is a fault with the TV and why it should do it

I thought cinema mode was always the correct option go for with these TV's? This was what I had my old PX600 at... also put my sisters at this setting.

I think the best bit of advice is:

Set it up how YOU think it looks best.... (providing of course you don't put it in dynamic mode or have the brightness/contrast up too high)

I tried the suggested "cinema" mode that is mentioned on these forums and hated it - it was far too dark and washed out......

So, as I say, just set it up how you like it ...
