Panasonic TX-29PX20 vertical lines lose sharpness to the sides

I recently bought this set mainly because it can do PAL and NTSC progressive and is a 4:3 set so it is ideal for gaming. But while I was watching a program with subtitles on it I noticed a flaw in PQ.

I started noticing that the outlines for letters such as "l" lose sharpness close to the sides while they are more in focus in the middle of the set. It is especially visible in subtitles because they are white on black and you can clearly see it on letters with long vertical lines in them such as "l". The outline between the white of the letter "l" and the black subtitle background is sharp in the middle while it gets more and more blurry the closer to the edge of the set.

I can lessen the effect by messing around with the sharpness control of the set but it is non the less still there and noticeable. I was thinking that this might a trademark of flat screen CRT televisions but I've certainly never heard of it before.

Has anyone else had this problem? Maybe on your Tau Panasonic sets? What is it cause by and can I get rid of it?

Is it just blurred or can you see colours on the edge like red and blue?

My mate has a brand new Sony that does this (widescreen). It doesn't bother him but it drives me up the wall!!

Anyone knows what I should mess around with in the service menu to diminish this convergence error thingy?
