Just got a phone call from Panasonic Business Systems with a little bit of good news....

AV-Sales.com are due to have stock of the 42" XGA 6th Gen Panasonic Plasma next week!!! Pana reckon they'll be able to dispatch to us at the beggining of next week so we'll have stock and a shiny new demo unit (right underneath our existing standard res model and right next to a Pio MXE!!!).

I'll wait until it's here before booking in demo's etc but we're hoping to do another forum members evening as soon as poss (probably on a Thursday again too). So those who want High Res and good contrast, your search is over

Being a newbie to plasmsa's... The new XGA or HD versions of the Panny 6th Gen what sources would be suited to them ? I'm guessing it's for computers and games consoles or high end projectors with pricey video scalers.
The reason I'm asking is that I've just got hold of the non HD version from yourselves. I'm looking to feed it a DVI input from my Tag DVD player with PSM module which is 572pline@50hz or 480p@60hz. I'm not planning on spending huge amounts in the future on any video scalers so 'm hoping your going to tell me it wouldn't be worth while in purchasing an HD version of the same plasma. BTW its still in the box as I'm waiting to move house !!
PS Have you sourced longer lengths of suitable DVI cable ?

Panasonic intended the XGA to be commercial only, for High Res graphics in conference rooms etc etc. However, there's quite a few forum members who swear high resolution is the only way to go (search for "high resolution" to see the threads). It will work much like any other plasma, taking normal video inputs etc but it has the bonus of having more pixels so you can get more detail out of your PC and you won't lose 96 lines of PAL! For the future you will be doing less downscaling with HDTV too.

We did a comparison of the 5series HD Vs SD and the HD had a very poor light output, at the launch Panasonic have said the brightness will now be identical to the SD but I guess we won't find out till next week ;)

I saw them side by side yesterday and the light output was similar (no difference perceptable). I did see a difference in picture details though, esp. watching from 6-7 feet distance. I also see this screendoor effect in the SD panel.

What's the going rate for these HD panels? Is it that much more than the SD?

    Planet,
Of course it's more expensive, it's the same resolution as the pioneer plasma, but hopefully higher contrast than the current one.
See Liam's post above for the website of one supplier (and prices).

If I was you I'd check out the SD panel first, you will probably find that with UK TV standards it'll look better than you'd expect.

One other thing, as it's commercial it will only come in grey !

about 4500. Must admit I thought about it but its really only an issue if you plan to hook up a PC for extended periods of time, which I don't.

    Neil,
I at first thought it actually had 4000:1, but then changed your PDF location slightly to TH-42PHD6UY.
I almost thought the TH-42PW6UY was too bright when I first saw it, so maybe 3000-1 will be ok.
I just wish I could get a day off next week, I'll have to wait until later to see it.

Out of my price range as I thought.

It is a shame though, as I kinda thought the improved picture with a PC connected was a big bonus. For me to play UT2003 online, email and use the 'net from the sofa comfortably, would be the height of utter hedonism!

    Hi Liam, :hiya:

Have you had your 42" HD units delivered yet?

If yes, What do you think?........ I know you were keen to see these following the positive advance word on them that you received at the Panny trade show.

    Best Regards,
    KBDVD.

I think the PW6 got very noticeable screendoor effect, myselft couldn't stand watching it as i was seeing it all over the panel.

Is it visible on the HD6?
