Bizarre but true... for some reason it's very cheap on their online shop, just £159 + £4 p&p! No idea why it should be so much cheaper than everywhere else, but I don't care :D

I've already ordered mine, just thought I would share the good news.

Web site is www.panasonic.co.uk . Hope this doesn't count as advertising, I've nothing to do with Panasonic etc etc. Just a happy bunny to pick up this player so cheap :).

Now I need to get the multi-region hack...

Maybe they're clearing them out - despite recently announcing their launch (??) - to make way for the forthcoming S77?

good one. It's a great player especially for that amount. I paid £210 or something only 3 months ago.

MR mod is achieved (usually) by renting a pre-programmed remote that updates your player. It costs between £10-20.

I got mine for £18.99 from dvdcodes.net via eBay, but - I advise extreme caution regarding this organisation. I did receive my remote eventually - for a DVD-F65 - and it did work perfectly, but it took a LONG time and many emails to get it, and I almost gave up at one point. There is a thread elsewhere in this forum regarding dvdcodes. I recommend you read this first, as someone else recommends an alternative source.

The Panasonic e-shop site shows this player at £299 - how and where does one find the cheaper price? No sign of £159!

If it shows as £159 in your basket at checkout, then they may be obliged to sell it at this price, even if it is an error.

    Ed:
Just tried it, and it does carry £159.99 price in basket through to checkout, although I didn't actually buy one - unfortunately. :(

What's the S97 like for CD playback? Any idea how it would compare on CD stereo with Marantz DV4500? Looking to replace current separate CD and DVD player.

    Thanks for any opinions.

Well, I havent any experience with Panasonic DVD players but i'd be VERY surprised if they come close to the DV4500 from Marantz. I have had MANY DVD players and my 4500 is the best i've had, especially with sound quality.

Thought it was probably a typo on the web site, as it's 399 Euros here in Germany. In any case, mine was ordered last Friday and I expect them to honour the price...

About upscaling - doesn't it do it over YCbCr? I want to connect it this way to my Sanyo PLV-Z1 and want to use 720p or 1080i if possible...

jason: what's the address of the DVD forums? I need to order the multi-region remote :)

    Cheers
    Richard

Hmm - wonder what's going on?

I did order this at weekend from Panasonic at the £159.99 price. Isn't it a pretty new model to be clearing out so soon?

Delighted whatever - seen some terrific reviews

perhaps a reflection that Similarly equiped Samsung are available at that price (HD945) and cheaper (HD745).
Also, that HDMI equiped DVD players probably aren't flying of the shelf at the moment as their isn't huge demand, so they might just be trying to kick start some sales and clear some overstock
Finally, it got a bad review in one of the home cimema mags last month, which whilst I take with a pinch of salt, probably didn't help sales.

I think the successor S77 is due out shortly (April?). Has similar spec, but maybe cut-down version of S97 - spot the difference.
