Does anyone know where I might still be able to get hold of a S97 - the only mailorder store I can find selling them (electronicDirect) appears to have gone bust.

It's been discontinued for quite some time now and, as such, probably the only way you'll get one now is via the second-hand market - why don't you try a post in the "Wanted" forum - you never know your luck.

    Cheers,

    Martin.

You might find a display model somewhere (like I did) in a small electronics store somewhere, its just a matter of finding one.

Its quite ironic actually, I remember back in August 2004 when I bought my Pioneer 575 I saw this new Panasonic called the S97 was about to be released, and no one knew anything about it, later it would recieve rave reviews. Its only when the damn thing wasn't being made any more I decided I wanted one! :suicide:

It is one of the maddest things I've ever seen an electronics company do. Excellent player when released at £300. Price falls. Product discontinued, even though it is still on sale in Europe (where it won the EISA award) and the US. Suggest you try hard to find one - it is a cracking little player.

Guys, thanks for the advice. You've spurred me into trying to find the last S97 in the country, rather than going for the easier option of a Denon 1920. To my delight, I've managed to find an S97 - ex-demo. Thanks for the feedback.

here in Belgium they are marketed as "new", they are only beginning to appear...

So if anyone needs one sent over :)

Excellent! Make sure you update to the latest firmware (v541). Details of how to do it, and a link to the update file, are available from here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=501352&perpage=20&pagenumber=1

Also look at http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=219715, which discusses differences between firmwares. I've moved from v.528 to v536 then straight to v541. I think the latter is best, but, at least, I'd make sure you upgrade from v.528!

    Hope you enjoy it! :D

Yeah mine was 528 when I purchased my S97.

Mine is 536 at the moment.

What improvements do you see in 541 over 536 Barzo?

Cool, did you see any difference in the image quality itself in terms of decoding / mosquito noise?

Possibly a bit less noise, but if I'm really honest, I can't remember! All I can say is that I noticed a postive difference overall after the v541 update, such that I did not feel I had made a mistake in making the update. What exactly that difference was, I can no longer really remember in detail, as I can't remember was v536 was like!

Also available in Germany (at least since last spring, I believe), e.g. at amazon.de. But more expensive than in UK and not MR.
