I went to see the PV500CAB in Currys today with a view of getting one. I have been put off because it has a very loud buzz coming from the rear. The pioneer had less but the Philips was awful.

The 50" Panasonic (had a 30 in the model) had less buzz than the PV500. Noise is a problem for me. I hate any noise that shouldn't be there. I don't think the PV500 is an option now :(

For what its worth there is a buzz from the rear on my 37 PV500, although its on the rear right of the panel, I know its the fan as you can feel the air being blown around. You can tell when it starts up when u power the screen up.

Was a little concerned at first but having contacted Panasonic and listened to some other PV500 sets I think panasonic were right when they told me that the noise will diminish with usuage. A 37inch screen in JL Solihull didnt make any noise and that has been running for over a month, however, the 42 inch screen they had was making the noise which they had set up the day before i went!

guess its a case of wait and see

On some of the panasonics, the buzzing is caused and gets louder when peak whites and very bright images are shown on the screen. This is due to the power supply in the Plasma. I get buzzing on my Viera when very bright images are shown, but it is only noticable when there is no other sound coming from the tv, eg: the silence between ad breaks for one.

I believe the new 500B 37",42" and 50" even though they are HD screens do not have fans.

I remember reading someones report on seeing them at Cebit and commenting on that.

    I could be wrong ...

I could hear the buzzing on the right side of the screen (from my position, so watching the glass), and it's annoying if you start hearing it, returned because of it (the 37pa50, not the hd version) practically all plasma's have it :p

It is frustrating that companies with years of expertise cannot or will not design reliably quiet circuitry.

Yes there WILL be always be some noise - if you put you ear close to the back of the set.

BUT the fact that the noise can INCREASE when the picture contrast is high and can be clearly heard at normal viewing distance is NOT acceptable in a product costing more than £1.5k.

Two SD Panasonics (PWD6 and PWD7) I've played with do this.

Several people have now commented on noise coming from bith the 500 and PA Viera models.

A brand new HD Samsung panel I played for a few days does this.

    Lots of Pioneers do this.

Yet an older and a brand new SD Samsung panel does not!

It MUST be possible to design well specified circuitry that is QUIET but in these days of manufacturers cutting costs to the bone - we may have to tolerate this - but it's galling on something that might cost you over £2000.

    Gussie :)

yep,got the buzz as well, but you only hear it when listen out for it. I only hear it when i lean against the rear of the plasma.

I can live with it, but i still don't understand why such companies with multi million r&d are unable to iron out little annoying glitches!!

I get a buzz from my PV500 (42") too. However, I can only hear it if I put my ears right next to the TV. It is a bit more noticeable when the TV is on standby.

Just received my 37" on Tuesday. Only a slight buzz noticable if I lean over the top of it. Cant really hear it otherwise. Got it set to Normal mode with brightness/contrast down to about 30%.

I honestly haven't noticed a buzz from my 37 inch pv500, instead i have been noticing other issues with the picture, a buzz is the least of my problems. I'll listen out for it when i am watching tonight.

My 42pv500b also has a small hum - it comes from the back (top right). I can only hear it when the unit is in standby, and I am very near the set.

Using the power switch removes the hum as you would expect. But you would hope for £2k you wouldn't have any!

some of this is just plain nuts. I have the 42 inch. If you put the volume on mute and glue you ear to the back of the set you can make out a sound. However you wont be able to hear it and watch the tv on my set at the same time so it really is a pointless thiung to complain about. Now buzzing from a surround amp that makes its way into the speakers, not THAT is something to get angry about.

Taken delivery of my 42" today and a buzz can only be heard when listening closely from behind the panel. In short, not a problem.

What I do have a problem with though is a swirling whistling noise eminating from the right hand speaker. While in no way deafening, its certainly easily discernable, especially with the sound down very low. (I should say regardless of whichever input, cable, picture or sound setting used).

I noticed another poster mentioning exactly the same problem in an ealier thread, although he didn't follow up with the eventual outcome - i.e. cure or replacement.

Anyone else had any experience of this small but annoying problem?
