Has anyone seen a review on the new panasonic plasma th37pv500. I was about to buy the th37pe50 when i heard about the high def version soon to be launched. I know our av reviews seem to lag behind the product release. Would the extra outlay be worthwhile as there seems to be mixed views on high def broadcasting in the near future. :)

I'm hanging on for the 42" model.

The specs are real good on the 500 range, but as they have not been released as yet, it will take a little while before the reviews start to emerge.

av-sales .co.ukare doing the 42" pv500 for £2325 with panny dmres10 dvd recorder and wall mount, which sounds better, they probably have a deal with the stand instead aswell, worth checking out ...

These prices are looking very good only thing I'm confused about is the Sky HD compatability question?

Don't worry, the PV500 series are all HD ready so Sky+HD and next-gen DVD will be fine.

Although sooner or later the resolution at which HD is broadcast will be greater than that of the panel...

What do you mean by that. As far as I was aware the European wide agreement is to broadcast HD at 720p/1080i for the forseeable future.

1080i would need to be decimated or scaled down to 720/768 etc.. to be displayed so you would loose vertical resolution... and by that time new plasmas would have 1080 or so lines.... same as all technology... it forever evolves

This has good prices for the PE50, should be cheap for PV500, plus you get 5 years guarantee on the PE50's, so hoping for the same on the PV500.

I was looking at the 42 PE50 today in powerhouse showing a riddick trailer, next to a Sony Wega plasma, the Panny p****d all over it. The Sony had Monsters inc. and you could see pixelation and solarising etc. but nothing on the PE50, looked ace for SD picture. Hope the PV500 is as good on SD.

Hi i emailed robert whyte and they said they will definitley be stocking the new pv500 plasma. ETA 3-4 weeks though.
If the prices good and you get 5 years warranty it will be a good purchase.
They couldnt give me a price as yet though.
    Cheers Gonzo.

out of interest, i noticed that the latest sd panny has a mat black screen, no glass and ugly grey speakers at the bottom. It also seems to have lost the curve? Does anyone know if the new one will look like the sd version. I have to admit it looks a lot uglier and cheaper that the old viera?

Sorry i have to disagree i like the new styling better now. The new screens width has been reduced i can now fit it in a lot easier also with the screen being higher on the desk stand i can now put my centre below the plasmas screen and i never cared much for the curve either.
    Just my opinion.
    Cheers Gonzo. :)

The pv500 does have black gloss finish, and also a very slight curve at the base but no visible speakers. Last months "Stuff" mag shows some pics.

Actually the gloss black finish at the front can be quite disturbing in some lightning situations. It reflects everything in the room easily.

    Isn't the native 720p resolution: 1280x720?

If so, How can a 1024x768 panel display that properly?

The image will be scaled horizontally, 1280>1024. Normally, a 1024x768 image is 4:3 but -42"HD and smaller- plasma pixels are rectangular.

I´m curious if you can go with the native 1024x720 (in case of the Panny PV500 37) when using a HTPC? (DVI) - if the physical shape of the pixel structure is not square but a rectangle, then this should be possible, or am I wrong?

Any experiences with scaling from 1280 to 1024?

I´m looking forward to use my future Plasma with my HTPC for HD content...

Sorry, i'm not familiar with plasma screens but i'm thinking of getting one. Please excuse my ignorence but if the front is not made of glass then what the fudge is it made of? I persume that when you are talking about the "front" you are talking about the "screen"?

Just to let you know I too have joined the PV500 club. 2 weeks ago I pre-ordered my 42pv500 from Robert Whyte who have agreed to take my 42pa20 trade in on it. I did buy that from them in the 1st place though. :)
