When the "adverts" come on my PD30 (in auto mode) zooms the picture in.

Now I know it's probably trying to deal with P&S material but the bottom and top parts of the picture are zoomed right off the screen. This results in (for example) the Boomerang logo disappearing right off the top and the bottom 2 lines of the Sky planner disappearing off the bottom.

Also it changes about 5 times per advert break. Is this normal? My old Sony coped far better than this in Smart mode and didn't chop the screen off!

    Hi CLH,

I use the TV in 4:3 mode, when anything is transmitted in widescreen you will get a true widescreen image and all others would revert to the original 4:3 mode.

When I first got the TV I also tried the auto mode thinking the same but it was a nightmare.

    Regards

Please see my post re: Sony HQ100. Does your set change the AV channel whenever the adverts appear?! EG,watching a DVD on AV2 with digital left switched on on AV1,whenever aspect ratio changes on AV1 this overides AV2!

Fortunately not at present. Though that could change.

It seems to vary from set to set. For example, my first Panasonic TX28DTX10 coped fairly well with aspect changes and only very occasionally messed up during dark scenes when it thought there were black borders that it needed to get rid of. However, the replacement (same model) I got on Saturday zooms in and out all the time and is very annoying.

    CLH,

I only had a humble 21" 4:3 that was 9 years old. When you switch your aspect ratio to 4:3 on your PD30 what does it do ? Is it better ?

    Yes, definitely.

But having lived with a Sony 28" that did auto mode really well I find it irritating to have to revert to 4:3 now.

for info I've found that when faced with 4:3 material the auto mode pushes the picture to "Zoom 1" which is annoying.

More problems, watching Shaun of the Dead last night extra features.

While watching the doc's on the disc the ratio wandered about randomly during each.
