I'm considering getting one of the following two cameras:

    Nikon Coolpix 5200

    Panasonic DMCFX5BS

    Major factors for me:

    - At least 4MP resolution
    - Must use Secure Digital memory format
    - Fairly compact size

I can get either choice for approx £250 squids. Advantage of the Nikon is the increased res. at 5MP and built in memory of 12MB plus its slightly smaller footprint when compared to the Panny. Advantage of the Panasonic is the Leica DC Vario-Elmarit lens :D top quality optics there. At the moment I am leaning towards the Nikon. What do you guys think? Any other candidates I should be looking at?

    TIA,

    S.

Two good choices, however I would consider the 12mb built in on the Nikon a disadvantage rather than an advantage, as it will only hold around 5 tip top images and if u wanted to print in a photo retailer cannot just take in ur mem card but would have to go through your PC first. Not a huge disadvan admitedly but I personally would prefer at least a 16mb card in the price.
On the other hand the Nikon 5200 uses the ED lens which is a really top banana Nikon lens so the Leica lens may not perform vastly better in comparison.
Out of the two brands I prefer panasonic, I do however love the shape of the 5200, but consider the Panasonics interface more comprehensive yet user friendly.

Sorry I seem to have left you exactly where you started!

Thanks for the replies guys :D DVDcake, I have read about the FX7 but there seems to be some confusion as to when it will replace the FX5 in the UK. Having said that, knowing me, by the time I have made my decision the FX7 will probably have been released.

Another camera you should consider is the Pentax Optio S4i . It seems to generally get good reviews and it very compact too. I may go for this one myself. It's around £250 -300 in the online retailers.

Just a point about the Panasonic FX5 i've seen a few not so favourable reviews of it in some of the current magazines which put me off slightly.

    Anyway the choice is yours.

Yesterday, I bought myself the Nikon Coolpix 5200 and a 512MB SD card from Jessops :D The best bit is that they do internet price matching so I got the Camera for £255 instead of £330 and the memory card for £60 instead of £110  :smashin:

Thanks for all your input guys. :)

Any more picture posts by me should now be crystal clear instead of crappy camera-phone quality. :p

What about my Leica Digilux 1, on sale for a knock-down price in another thread in classifieds? - do a search on Leica. Obviously is has a Leica lens but it's built by Panasonic I'd guess.

    It's 4Mp & uses SD cards.
