Just bought one of these and used it for the first time last night.
On playback and recording there is noise coming from the motor which is quite a bit louder than my other Panasonic and is quite noticable unless the tv volume is high. Is this normal ?

Wee bit louder due to less weighty build than older machines, wouldn't say it should be as loud as described.
Take it into your supplying dealer, they will unbox another for you to compare, providing you bought from them.
If mail order......ask for a swap-out replacement to set your mind at rest.

I've since noticed that if i press down on the top of the unit the noise almost goes. IT sounds a bit like when you run a wet finger round the top of a glass. I might try and put the dvd player directly on top of it to weigh down the top a little

Is it the metal case vibrating in fast winding?
If so that's normal.....some pencil erasers between dvd and vcr will replicate your finger pressing down.

I've been using a fairly noisy Panasonic vcr for about 5 years. I recently replaced the head (upper drum) because it was showing signs of wear. The noise vanished after doing this.
But in your case I suppose a replacement machine might be worth getting. If the store allows it of course.
