Panasonic launch their 50" 1080p plasma, available in Japan from 1 November.

How long until I can buy one in UK (usual caveats: accepts native resolution at 50Hz over digital, no fixed frame-buffer, monitor version not television, etc.)

1 November is the date for the 65" Panasonic 1080p plasma. I don't think the 50" is ready to go yet. I expect it in 2006, but maybe I'm wrong. At least no other site on the internet I've seen sais anything about release dates of the 50" 1080p plasma yet. The press release doesn't, either. The press release of the 65" 1080p speaks about 1 November.

A more important question is the price of the new 50" 1080p panel. How much is this baby gonna cost? I agree with Madshi : 2006 will probably when this panel is going to be deployed (first in Japan, then the US and then Europe). The rest of the world will have to hold their breath.

Well, there's one thing which is important for Europe release and that is the soccer world cup. It's being explicitly mentioned by both Panasonic and Pioneer over and over again, cause they hope that it will greatly push HD in Europe. But that also means, that both Panasonic and Pioneer will try to release 1080p plasmas in time in *Europe*. So we might not be that far behind this time, thanks to the soccer world cup.

Soccer?????
Ah well, I'm writing both in UK and US forums, while being a native German. Writing "football" doesn't work in the US, so I'm usually writing "soccer" everywhere.

Unless the BBC and ITV show the world cup in HD via satellite I don't see how else it can be seen in the UK? The World Cup finals are normally on terrestrial only so Sky HD will be irrelevant

Well, I don't know about UK. I can just say that we'll get all world cup games in HD via pay tv here in Germany.

http://www.avinfo.co.uk/index.php?main=story&itemid=15058178 quotes the press release saying "The model will be available in Japan from November 1, 2005." but it looks like it should refer to 65" model.
