I am getting tempted by these 2
    DMRE95HEBSM
    DMRE500HEBS

Apart from the 400GB v 160GB hard drives, what are the real differnces between these 2 models.

Is the 400GB model worth approx £400 more?

I have'nt done a detailed search, but last time I checked there was nearer £600 difference between the two, especially as the E95 dropped to below £600 recently on the internet.

In my opinion that's too much difference.
There are additional advantages of the E500 such as the ability to transfer to CF card in MPEG-4, and the ethernet control. Neither of which were any interest to me, so I purchased the E95, and have not regretted it at all.

If the E500 had HDMI output then it would be an attempt at futureproofing for connection to high-end screens.
IMO I would do what I did, buy the E95, and save the difference for a HD-DVD recorder in 2 years time. That's if there's anything your allowed to record by then!

    Steve :)

The main features the E500 has which the E95 doesn't are:
    - 400GB HDD (the E95 has 160GB)
    - 5.1 Channel DVD-Audio playback (the E95 has 2 channel)
    - DTS/DD Decoding
    - MPEG4 Recording
    - Ethernet Connection
    - Gold plated connectors

As Steve says - whether this is worth £600 is upto you.

    Quote from 'www.panasonic.com/recorder' :

'You can even stream MPEG4 videos and JPEG still images from the DMR-E500HS hard disk to your PC for viewing'

whatever that may mean in practice.....

Means you can watch JPEGs/MPEG4 on your PC/second E500 - no FTP allowed though I'm afraid.

My budget wouldn't stretch to the E500 so I bought the E95.

I think I'd still have bought the E95 even if I could have afforded the E500 - it doesn't do enough extra to justify the extra cost.

As ever, you pay over the odds to get the flagship model.

Although the PC can't copy the MPEG's it can copy the JPEG's by using the E500's built in DIGA Manager software which is accessed via Ethernet on a PC. It's more about being able to access stuff remotely, i.e. play movies from the HDD upstairs in the bedroom whilst the E500 sits in the lounge. This feature is intended to be included infuture products.

Many thanks for the info - I will keep an eye out for the mark 2 where you are able to pull the files off through the ethernet port - or does anyone know of a make/model where this is possible - I do not mind having a smaller HD space to allow this functionality - i do not intend to use it in the authodox method, rather as a teaching method. If it is an industrial rather than home model, I would still be interested...

    Thanks in advance
