Panasonic GZ OLED Series Owners Thread

I really hope Panasonic resolve the sound issue soon as I now have a buyer lined up for my current TV.

It would just be my luck it'll turn out to be something that can't be fixed entirely....

There are a lot of people hoping the same. It seems nobody is quite sure if its a hardware or software issue, but apart from the sound, the general consensus is that the GZs are superb

Yep. The picture performance versus the amazing price wins me over. That even the LG C9 is £200 more and the Sony AG9 £1100! is something else...

I just don't want the hassle of getting it with the sound issue and waiting for a firmware update that might not fix it completely or have engineers out to fix it or take it away.

Not had any sound issues myself yet (fingers crossed), but then most of my viewing to this point the sound doesn't actually go via the tv in any way at all. Those times it has been though (with arc), I've been okay to this point.

Yes, completely understand that.
I've not had any issues with mine using my soundbar, so the tv is everything I could have hoped for and more. Others are not so fortunate.
Its a real shame as excluding the sound problems, any other issues with the set I think are very minor. I still think the 2019 LGs and Sonys are great, but for the price the panny is hard to beat. Every day I watch things I'm blown away by it...

"Dynamic is the default and it shouldn't mean it's forced to DV. It just means DV and HDR10+ are supported (but they can be switched off individually)"

Can I ask where in settings is possible to switch individually HDR10+/DV ON/OFF?

Hi moonda the picture setting i was using was Pro 1

This is NOT a fault. If you're rejecting a TV for this, you're doing so simply through insufficient understanding of what you're experiencing. This is typical of many devices (including iPhone cases when they're connected to chargers) and is because the mains connection is Class 2 - ie it doesn't include a connection to electrical earth. The mains cable in the TV is only two-core - live and neutral, there is no earth connection. Metal parts of the case can carry a voltage, which is what you can feel, through leakage currents, but these are through extremely high impedance paths. You are in absolutely no danger whatsoever, this is not a fault. If you measure the case potential with reference to ground using a digital multimeter, you will expect to get a reading, as the input impedance on the meter is in the order of tens of mega-ohms, which is the same sort of impedance that's present between the case and actual mains. If you try the same thing with an older analogue meter, you will find a very much lower voltage is measured, because the 20K ohms or so of that sort of meter represents almost a short circuit to earth compared to the case to mains impedance of the TV.

You may find that the buzzing disappears when you connect a HDMI, aerial or audio lead which is connected to earth via a class 1 device.

Stop rubbing your TV and start enjoying the pictures. :)
Great post mate. :smashin:

Good stuff. Care to share what settings have worked for you, as it may help others? :smashin:

Looks like the LG OLEDs are getting additional HDMI 2.1 features via a firmware update.
LG Announces NVIDIA G-Sync Support for E9 and C9 Series OLEDs - AVSForum.com

Does this mean Panasonic could do the same seeing as they have HDMI 2.1 ports also (I presume they're 2.1 sure to ALLM appearing on them?)?
Panasonic's don't have 2.1 ports, they're 2.0b. ALLM is a feature which is included in the 2.1 spec, but it can be optionally added to 2.0b via firmware since it probably doesn't require much extra bandwidth. Other manufacturers have added eARC to their 2.0b ports via firmware but Panasonic have already stated that they only plan to support ALLM at the moment.

I don't know much about it so this could be way off, but I think G-sync is just an Nvidia branded form of VRR. So for the LG to support it when it already supports VRR is probably just a case of getting it certified.

Either way, LG is so far the only manufacturer with "full" 2.1 support. I'm sure other manufacturers will catch up in the next 2 years. It would be amazing if Panasonic added eARC and VRR to the GZ series via firmware (assuming the HDMI board they used is even capable of it) but I won't hold my breath .

I'm not in a rush to hear cracklegate in lossless Dolby TrueHD so for now let's just hope they fix the sound issues!

Panasonic's don't have 2.1 ports, they're 2.0b.
Cheers, Fillius.

I’m just confused as I actually received an email from Panasonic support here in Australia stating their HDMI ports are 2.1...I made sure they were referring to the HDMI spec & not confusing it with HDCP...

Here are the emails contents...

Me: Which version of HDMI port will be on the GZ1000U OLED this year?

Panasonic: GZ1000 supports HDCP 2.2 as noted in the HDMI section of the Full Specification.

Me: That’s not what I’m asking. I’m after the HDMI version. Is it going to be 1.4 with some HDMI 2.0 features (& if so, which features will they be?), or will they be full HDMI 2.0, 2.1, 2.1a or 2.1b?

Panasonic: Thank you for your reply. TH-65GZ1000U has HDMI 2.1. For further enquiries, feel free to contact us.

This correspondence was back in late June though, so if there have been any evidence of the HDMI ports not being 2.1, I’d appreciate it.

Yeah, that’d be great. So VRR can be added to HDMI 2.0b ports?

Yeah, that’d be great. So VRR can be added to HDMI 2.0b ports?
That is puzzling... In the video from CES with Rob from Panasonic he deffinately said 2.0b.

I'm assuming the support answer was just wrong, they didn't exactly answer your initial question correctly... It happens all the time. I returned my Philips 803 OLED because they promised HDR10+ support but after 6 months of waiting for firmware to add it, they told me it would never be supported over HDMI, something which hadn't been mentioned in any of their previous responses.

If it did have 2.1 then surely they would be advertising this to compete with LG... Unless it does have a 2.1 capable chipset but the firmware isn't ready for any features other than ALLM so they can't get it certified. VRR and eARC could probably be added later, some AVR receivers have been updated to add eARC even though they were released a year or two ago and have 2.0b ports.

I’m thinking along the same lines, after using their phone support (atrocious), I wouldn’t put it past them to have just as unqualified email support.

But now I’m very curious.

Could you link that video & where he said they were 2.0b...I’ll forward it onto Panasonic, in that original email thread, & see how they respond now...

My wife had Sanditon (ITV HD) last night on our 950, recorded on sky so I assume being upscaled from 1080i.
It really didnt look great at all on my default of Pro 1, or Pro 2 (when it got darker)
Its almost as though they applied a misty fuzzy filter over the broadcast.
I dont think its my set as everything else still looks superb in 1080i and up

Setup - HDMI HDR Setting - HDR Dynamic Setting
But this only allows Dynamic (DV/HDR10+) or Static (HDR10). So am I right, that is not possible to force different kinds of Dynamic HDR? If for example TV prefer HDR10+ over DV (which probably Panasonic do) then I cant play movie in DV, if the UHD movie has both format?

You seem to be checking Setup - HDMI HDR Setting - HDR Setting instead of HDR Dynamic Setting.

In the HDMI HDR settings you have HDR = Dynamic or Static AND HDR Dynamic Settings, go into that one and you will see: HDR10+ = On or Off and Dolby Vision = On or Off.

Here's the video, it wasn't CES sorry, it was in Frankfurt when they announced the GZ950. Only the GZ2000 was announced at CES. They talk about HDMI 2.1 (or lack thereof) starting at 8:45.

Setup - HDMI HDR Setting - HDR Dynamic Setting

For some reason this settings seems to force ALL content frpm my ub820 player's Neflix app to DV, including HD and SD which can look weird and unnatural. So far posted on here and 2 FB forums but can't seem to fix it

I took delivery of a 65” GZ950B on Saturday (purchased from Crampton & Moore in Leeds).

So far, it completely surpasses my expectations. Picture quality and HDR performance are astonishing. I’m exceedingly happy with it.

I thought the black levels on my previous Panasonic Plasma were great, but the black level performance of the GZ950B is just phenomenal.

4K UHD HDR playback from my Oppo 203 looks superb as does NetFlix and Amazon Prime UHD content from the built-in Apps.

NetFlix remains stubbornly a 60 Hz service (but that's not a Panasonic issue). Dolby Atmos via ARC (HDMI2) works perfectly with my Denon X6200W). I’ve had no sound dropouts or crackles. NetFlix tops out at 11.25 Mbit/s.

HDR from my XBOX One X also looks amazing in supported games and the ALLM works perfectly. I did find the if use the NetFlix App on the XBOX it immediately goes into Dolby Vision mode, even for non-Dolby Vision content, but this is a Microsoft / NetFlix issue and not a Panasonic problem.

YouTube 4K HDR 60 Hz content (such as Costa Rica video) look so bright and life-like.

My only annoying issue is the appearance of red sparkles on 2160P UHD HDR content delivered over my 5 metre HDMI cable. The Profigold cable is from 2012, and I suspect it’s not quite up to the job (it’s not UHD Premium certified). So I may have to replace with a Ugreen Fibre Hybrid HDMI cable.

And ironically my Panasonic Microwave interferes with the Wi-fi reception on the TV, but that’s a very minor problem, which I can fix by running in an additional CAT 5 cable...

Regards,

James

(A very happy Panasonic customer).
