Stills are my week link compared moving but i cant get stills for toffee with my GH2,for wildlife i would use my 14-140mm or 45-200mm but they never auto focus quick enough or manualy i am too slow before the shot is gone, looking at the great pictures on the thread i am doing something wrong, whats the best mode for stills outdoors.

Hi, Chris !

Let me share my principal setting of the GH2 with you.
I shoot RAW !
Focus Priority is set to off.
Film choice is "dynamic" although I think this has no influence in RAW

Of course, when shooting birds in flight, you need to shoot a lot of pictures to get a few good ones.
The pics I'm showing here (the mows) are from a series of 50 !
That's only 10% success factor

Here's some more birds

Thanks very much for that advice f6cvalkyrie ,so it sounds by what you are saying that if i am in movie mode switching fast enough to get stills is not on and i have to be on one or the other,is raw better and what mode IE scenery portrait normal is advised for nature.Chris

Hi, Chris,

First I think you need to choose when you go for a shoot : video or stills ...
I cannot imagine that one successfully switch between these modes in ones mind. Don't know whether it's possible to make a still picture while filming, but it requires such a different approach ....

Second, I do never use any of the "modes" offered by the GH2. As a convinced RAW shooter, I rely on post-processing to make the picture look exactly as I want. Rules of thumb are however that, when shootings handheld, one needs a shutter speed faster than 1/2xFL of the lens used. Example : handholding my 45-200mm at the long end (200m) rarely results in a sharp image if a shutter speed faster than 1/400 sec cannot be met. Eventually, I up the iso to gain shutter speed, but preferably not above 1280. If you're shooting moving subjects, like birds in flight, then I definitely recommend even faster shutter speeds, like 1/1000 or even faster. Do set Focus Priority to "off", and shoot lots of pics. You'll certainly have a few good ones ;)

I hope this helps, Chris !

Yesterday, a nice day, and a walk on a 'brocante' in Waterloo, nearby here.
I got somewhat carried away by reflections of an interesting sky in some of the objects for sale

Where are all the other micro 4/3 shooters ?
Left for Christmas shopping, or Christmas holidays already ????

Our pheasant will probably be a valuable successor to Patches.
He's now coming out of his woodland several times a day.
I think that my wife will soon invite him at our breakfast table.
Anyway, he has found this bench in the garden already :D
