I can get either of these machines for about £160 delivered. I think both have advantages dual layer for the LG . I am buying this as a present for a freind in Ireland, he has Sky+ and so it will likely be used to back up programmes from that.

Does the LG have a 'Flexible' recording mode?

Ease of use and compatability are of some importance as is build quality as the kids will be using it!
Is DIVX important as the LG does and the panasonic does not?

Anybody suggest an alternative for the same price?

    Thanks for your help

I have used an LG recorder. They are good, but they don't usually have RGB-in, which, as far as I can tell from the downloaded instruction manual, is also the case with the 7800. I couldn't see an option for flexible record either.

Gone for the LG £159 Dellivered.
Bought it for a freind in Ireland so the more flexible tuner could pay dividends.
He also likes the +R/RW as he has a lot of Philips stuff and his PC burns +RW discs.
Lack off RGB seems a drawback but in reality it is still far better than his VHS could ever deliver!
The fact it can also record dual layer discs is a great benefit that i miss on my Tosh XS34... My recordings anything over 2Hr 20 Min and the quality is rubbish forget RGB benefits!!! he can now record upto 7.3 Hrs at full res LP or 3.6 Hrs at standard SP DVD quality or 1.8 Hrs at maximum quality... oh how i wish.
I spend ages editing to get recordings under the magic 2Hr 20 min to keep the picture quality watchable.

    I think it's a good choice, if you're not worried about rgb-in.
I believe the LG's use a chipset (LSI I think) which is rated for the performance of recordings up to 4 hours too. Similar to JVC.
