We have only just got a widescreen TV so the output from the Sky box was set to 4:3 before. All the recordings on the EH50 were in this format. Now quite a lot of these were films which were recorded to RAM disk and then authored on the PC using TMPGEnc to -R disks.

What I want to know is if I now wait until they are broadcast again and re-record them using the same method to -R disks will they be in 16:9 format? The reason I ask is that I have seen several threads saying that there are problems with the widescreen flag.

Was your Sky box set to....

    4:3 Letterbox
    or
    4:3 Center Cutout?

PS I don't have Sky, but I have a Panasonic DVD Recorder recording from a Freeview Box and I use a Widescreen TV.

Just 4:3 NOT 4:3L so I assume that it was centre cutout.

In that case then the additional widescreen information would have been thrown away, best bet would be to re-record them.

If you record to DVD-RAM and have the 'Rec for High Speed Dub' switched 'OFF' the flag is recorded without problems to DVD-RAM discs.

    Hope that helps.

How about when you record to DVD-R disks from DVD-RAM disks (using TMPGEnc), is the widescreen information lost or not?

If you have recorded to DVD-RAM and write to DVD-R using TMPGEnc (DVD Author i assume you are using), as long as the DVD-R is selected as 16:9 there should be no problems.

What is lost when transfering to DVD-R (etc on newer Panasonic Recorders) on Panasonic Recorders is the WSS (widescreen switching signal) flag. No picture information is lost if recording an anamorphic widescreen signal.

If you have recorded from SKY in 4:3 center cutout then the widescreen extra picture info was lost due to the SKY box.

    Hope that helps.
