My brother got one of these today & has encountered a problem with playback of region 1 disks.
Can't figure out if the problem is connections, setup or a faulty region mod.
He's using the S-video output so he can switch through his AV amp up to his plasma.
It plays region 2 discs fine but put in a region 1 disc & the picture turns black & white.
If he selects NTSC in the setup menu on the player then it's colour.
    Shirley this isn't right
With his previous Sony player which was also connected via S-video he never had to select the between PAL/NTSC.

    Hope you can help :D

    Cheers, Paul

As far as I can tell from the E55 user manual, when switched to PAL you will be getting PAL 60 output, with subcarrier at 4.43Mhz.

Only when switched to NTSC will you get the correct 3.58Mhz, which your plasma presumably expects.

RGB or Component connections would get around the problem.

    Thanks for the reply :smashin:
Is there an easy way to convert from RGB to S-video?

    Cheers, Paul

Seen this converter over at J.S. Technology but under the Technical Information section it's discription is:

    Auto-detection:
Computer analysis of input signal to determine if the RGB input is formatted for PAL or NTSC.
Chrominance subcarrier automatically adjusted to suit - 4.43MHz for PAL and 3.58MHz for NTSC.
PAL and NTSC phase information adjusted to suit video standard.

Is this saying that there is a difference between PAL & NTSC RGB?
If I input NTSC RGB would I still end up with my subcarrier in the wrong place

    Cheers, Paul

It looks like the RGB to s-video unit is designed to give the correct subcarrier for either PAL or NTSC.

For NTSC you will get a 3.58MHz subcarrier which should keep your TV happy.

Before buying I would be inclined to check the manual for the plasma interface to make absolutely sure it expects true NTSC. :)
