Looking to purchase E100 DVD Recorder. Any comments yet from people who now own one? Is it worth the extra £200 over the HS2?

Best price I have seen is £749 at totaldigital.biz. Never used them before. Does anyone know if they are reliable?

    Can it be purchased cheaper?

    Thanks,

    Mark Balcombe

I think its worth the extra for the 80Gb HD over the 40Gb in the HS2 also the MPEG-4 encoding is quite useful.

I could of gone with Totaldigital but as i had never used them before i went for the safer option of multiregion magic who i had used before.

I recommend them very highly i ordered last wednesday evening and received it just after 8am friday morning, Excellent !!

I just got my E100 yesterday. Here are my first thoughts

    1. Its heavier than a normal DVD player
    2. Recording to the hard drive preserves the wide screen switching signal (haven't checked recording to DVD-Ram)
    3. MPEG4 recording is very poor quality (approx 300 x 200 at 15 fps at max setting). It gets played back in a small window.
    4. MPEG4 can be saved to and played from DVD discs. However it is saved in .asf files. I haven't worked out yet if compatible .asf files can be generated on a PC (at much better quality)
    5. It can read +RW discs. I backed up a DVD on the PC using disc at once and this played with no problems. I don't know if +VR discs recorded on a set-top box will work
    6. You can't set it to Auto record Sky. You need to set the timer and the AutoView function
    7. When starting up it cuts out the pass through signal for a few seconds
    8. When inserting a DVD movie it doesn't auto play!

These might mostly like negative points, but they are just what I noticed while playing with it. I expect when I start using it seriously the HD and editing and quality will shine through.

The MPEG4 recording is for people who want to record programmes on their E100 and the dub into MPEG4 to watch on a portable device. In short it allows you to watch your favourite soap on the train in the way to work. Quality takes second place therefore to file sizes.

This is if you have HDD mode selected before you enter the disk. If you select DVD mode and then enter the disk it should autoplay.

I know this was the intention and it makes sense for memory cards. I was hoping I could make use of the MPEG4 to make backups to DVD discs. I might do a short investigation to see if there is any way to generate compatible .asf files of high quality on the PC.

I got my E100 from Techtronics for approx £800.

I only really played with it last night. I expect it will take a couple of weeks to really get to know what it can do.

I am currently awaiting delivery of my panny. I know it only writes DVD-R but can it read DVD+R (burned on a Sony pc writer).

    Thanks

Just seen one of theses beasts today. Looks very nice.

    Two Questions.

    1. Looks like it has quite a large fan on the back. Is there much noise when in operation?

    2. I see the comment above regarding Auto record & sky. Has anyone tried a FTA box?

Any one know if the E100 will copy from HD to DVD-R at 4 speed?

I know the new pioneer does.

    Thanks

    Mike
