Panasonic DVD players region free hack - Part 2

Unfortunately I dont think so. The only other device I have with IR on it is my (don't laugh) mobile - Nokia 6310i

good old phone - I loved mine till the battery died and the company wouldn't pay £15 to repkace the battery but paid £150 for a new phone...

Pity as there are some code files about that could be used from pda/smartphone etc.

I do have an E63 (Nokia - sold the Merc) and a Blackberry Curve - would they be any good?

e63 doesn't have IR - and the curve doesn't either I think....

Well I know I can buy a region free version of this player (which might be done with firmware) and my Panasonic shop can send it away to there service centre and get it done for £35.00. I'm tempted by this as at least it is guaranteed (I'll test with a region 1 DVD before paying), but doing it from a programable remote must surely be possible.

I read somewhere (I think it was on the massive thread early on) that some of the players need 12 codes, not 10. I think there was some debate on the truth of that, but does anyone have a 12 code set that might work?

It turns out, there is an alternative to firmwareinfo.com: TPS ON-LINE. They answered my email in a helpful, prompt and friendly manner. Just email them, stating your precise device name (i.e. what you would put in the application for firmwareinfo) and ask if they would sell you just the modified firmware enabling multi-region blu-ray.
Lets stop throwing money at firmwareinfo.com with their ridiculous business practice and buy from somebody with proper business etiquette.

I've checked out firmwareinfo.com but I don't feel comfortable with their business practice.
I've been looking for a new Blu-ray player with multi region enhancement.
TPS is selling the "Panasonic DMP-BDT500EB MULTIREGION 3D Blu-ray Player" for £349 (with a 3 year warranty). Would you say that's a good price?

The firmwareinfo.com enhanced firmware has more features though.
I wonder if you'd need any of those >>>

TPS:

• Play Blu-ray Discs and DVDs from all regions
• Blu-ray PUO (Protected User Operation) deactivation
• DVD UOP (User Operation Prohibition) deactivation
Firmwareinfo.com:

• DVD and Blu-ray region changing with the original Panasonic™ remote control (Available DVD regions: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 / Available Blu-ray regions: A,B,C) with DVD region verification deactivation
• DVD UOP (User operation prohibition) deactivation
• Blu-Ray PUO (Protected user operation) deactivation
• Cinavia™ free operation
• Additional audio enhancement modes for all models
• High clarity sound for all models
• Multichannel audio reformatting for all models
• Advanced video status information for all models
• PAL support for all models

I ordered the firmware from TPS for my BDT320, and it features everything in the above list apart from the cinavia.

The button combo to change the regions seems to be a little bit hit and miss, I don't know if I'm doing it too fast/slow, but it does work eventually. And I've got back my favourite feature of the high-end 2012 models, the playback information screen. Yay!

Is it worth £100 for a little disc of software? Not really. But it saved me the (potential) hassle of signing up to firmwareinfo.com and I can retire my region A BDT110. Two birds with one stone and all of that.

So I purchased a "Panasonic DMP-BDT500EB MULTIREGION 3D Blu-ray Player" via TPS (3 year warranty).
I'm very happy to finally own a Multiregion Blu-ray player!

This guy is really unbelievable.

I have four players that I wanted to make region free, all Panasonic DMP-BD85.

After several attempts to apply for his firmware for donations of up to 100 Euros per device, he flat out refused to give me anything more than only one firmware. I donated 50 Euros to him for this, and offered 300 Euros for my three other players, all while agreeing to follow his instructions and template to the letter, and promising and assuring him that I will not contact him again for support.

He flat out turned this down. It is exactly like three separate people wanted to donate 100 Euros each, and he actually does not want the 300 Euros, just so he can know that one person cannot have access to his precious region free firmware on more than one device.

I can understand that if someone can figure out how to write custom firmware like this, that they would want to sell it. I can even understand how they would want "donations" instead of a sale. But I cannot understand how it is more important to spend money in the form of a multi hundred Euro opportunity cost just so they can demean and humiliate someone.

I totally blame myself and fully admit that I am extremely stupid and sorry that I ever gave this guy any money to begin with. No one should support this kind of person in any way whatsoever.

Does anyone know any other way to modify the DMP-BD85P to be region free?

Nope - but you could of course get three friends to apply using the details you specify and offer 50 euros each again and save 150 euros.... I guess he's paranoid that if you get 2 mac coded firmwares for the same machine you'll suddenly find out which 4 words of data contain the key and the work out how the mac address is encoded and "voila".....

I am going to try to go with tps dot uk dot com. Will update with how that goes.

If I was going to try to hack his firmware, why would I ask him for four, instead of two, or even three? And why would I do it from one account instead of doing it from different accounts at different times to hide the fact that I'm the same person?

Anyway, that guy really sucks.

I hope the TPS place doesn't distrust me. But I guess in today's world trust is very hard to come by.

I tried placing an order with the TPS website... so far it appears I'm being completely ignored. I got an order number from the web site, but no e-mail acknowledgement. I tried e-mailing the address on their website twice, once with my model/firmware/mac info, and once the next day asking for status... nothing.
Why does everyone offering custom firmware treat people so badly? I really did not expect that... I just don't understand it.

Until now, I've been mainly dealing with JVB Digital, who has excellent service and actually works in a logical normal manner... you give them money, they give you what you order, and they treat you nicely on top of it.

Since my players are the Panasonic BD85, JVB's hardware mod doesn't work on it, so I've decided to take the route of custom firmware... and it proves to be impossible. I did get the one copy from firmwareinfo, so I can see that it is possible and it works... but ALL of the people who have the ability to make this firmware, only want certain people to have it in some kind of extremely limited manner or something? They don't want or care about money from selling it? I just don't get it.
I have never been this perplexed or confused.

I guess I will have to buy different players and have JVB modify them, to get around this b******t.

Here's the e-mail they just sent me:

Hello

Sorry, but we are unable to fulfil your order. Your credit card has not been charged.

Apologies if this has been posted before :

I have successfully used the method in Post #12 here: Panasonic BDT220 - hack for DVD only | AVForums to make a BDT500 BluRay player multi-region for DVDs using a Harmony 650 remote.
Guess it should work for panasonic DVD players as well ?

Has anyone had any success making a BD79 region free for either blu-ray or DVD? Apparently the firmware method doesn't work?

I seem to remember reading about old windows based PDAs being able to transmit the codes. Is this still possible? Can't find any mention of it now.

yes - as possible as it ever was just like using the One-For-All Remotes...

...perhaps I should have added - drop me a line if you need further info.
