This is the classic symptom of the Voltage Regulator failure for which there is a great deal of self-help advice available.

There is a massive thread dealing with it.

Although this thread is headed for the E85, the same problem afflicts the E55.

Can definitely confirm that this IS the cause as I had exactly the same problem.
I took mine to my local tv guy and he confirmed it was a steady source of employment for him!! Common fault!
He fixed it (£35.00 all-in) and it is now perfect although lying completely unused in my living room as I had already purchased a replacement DMR-EZ45V, thinking the E55 was kaput!
