Panasonic DMRE55 and recording difficulties from STB

I've just bought a DMRE55 and linked it up via scart from AV1 to TV and Thomson DTI 1000 set top box VCR out scart to AV2 on the dvd. (I've also linked the TV out scart from the STB to another scart socket on my TV). Problem being I can record ok diretc from the TV but when I try to record via AV2 from the freeview box a message pops up saying I don't have permission to copy the material! Panasonic say it must be the set top box and Thomson say it must be the DVD. Anyone have any idea what's happening here?

It's almost certainly the Freeview set top box. Some boxes seem to be incorrectly setting the copy protection flag on all channels so DVD recorders will not record anything from them.

There are reports on this forum of similar problems with some Nokia and Humax boxes.

Can you borrow an alternative Freeview box to confirm the Thomson is at fault?

If it helps which it probably doesn't...I feed my E55 from Sky+ box which works OK.

I feed my E85 (AV2) with a Labgear DTT100 (RGB) and get no problems. Why don't you try FV box TV Scart to E55 AV2 (RGB)?

Thanks John, not sure it is the Freeview box as I actually upgraded to the Panasonic after trying out 2 Philips DVDR 610s. Although they couldn't record properly they did record a bit from the Freeview box - unless the constant flicking from pause to record on the Philips machine was caused by the copy protection flag from the box?

Can't comment on how Philips machines react to copy protection, but if two previous machines weren't entirely happy with recording from the Thomson I'd be at least a little suspicious. :)

When I had some problems with my Toshiba XS32 complaining about copy protected material (this was from my camcorder, not TV) it would record a bit, stop, give me an error, then start again… so it is possible that whatever the Thompson box is doing was also confusing the Philips recorder, which is why it couldn’t record properly. I would defiantly try a different Freeview box.

Very strange - I have exactly the same setup. Panasonic E55 / Thompson DTI1000 STB and haven;t had any problems with any Freeview chanels!

This is a problem caused by the Freeview box - a fairly well known one - the solution comes in the form of an over air update for your machine. I don't have a clue when Thompson will next broadcast it - but if you ask on the Freeview forum someone else might!
