My video recorder has started to turn itself off and will not respond to the remote control or to having the on/off button on the machine pressed.
The only way I can wake it up is to unplug it from the mains and leave it for a few minutes. When I plug it back in sometimes it wakes up and starts working and sometimes it displays the message "PLEASE WAIT" and continues to do this for a long time - i.e. an hour or more.
This behaviour is sometimes preceded by the HDMI symbol with and X above it appearing on the screen.
Does anyone know the cause or how I can fix it?
Thank you.

Welcome to the forum.

The most likely cause is failing electrolytics in the power supply section which will need proper attention.

Thank you for the reply.
Not sure exactly when I bought it but it was less than five years ago. This does not inspire faith in Panasonic electronic devices.
