Question Panasonic DMR-EX78 dead

Hello., I have a Panasonic DMR-EX78 DVD recorder, maybe around 10 years old. It had been working perfectly and now there is no display (such as the clock), the unit will not switch on by its own swich nor using the remote. The fan does run, though. The outputon screen, fed by SCART lead, is distorted. I've tried unplugging from the mains and leaving overnight, but there's still nothing except the fan running. Does anyone have any suggestions, please?

Welcome to the forum.

The problem is most likely due to failure of or 'blown' electrolytic capacitors on the power supply PCB.
It is also possible that the main regulator and maybe some diodes have been damaged too.
In case that has not happened yet you should not leave it powered when in this condition.
If you are lucky it will just be due to capacitors.

Options:

1 - have it repaired
2 - Look for the number on the board ( probably a VEP plus four digits number) Search for that number on the web or ebay and get a replacement board.
3 - Replace the capacitors by yourself or some suitably competent person.
